Doubtful. Thought MacT might go with Nichuskin. Nurse will be an every day NHLer but from what I've seen there's nothing that makes him stand out or project him to be a top pairing guy. - woopstash
OK. I disagree. First off, hes a great athlete and has an effective skating style that gets him around quickly despite his size. Second, his hockey sense (particularily on D) is excellent. He also has a burgeoning offensive game to boot. |

Same could've been said about a lot of defenseman. Nurse has the tools and character to be a top 2 dman. Up to him now. He could be better than jones. - ystoil
Not a chance!! The top 3 teams who passed on Jones are going to regret it. Nashville couldn't freaking believe he fell to them at 4 & the look on Poile's face was of disbelief. I bet they partied with naked women all night long - which isn't a bad thing!! |

I don't need to pull up past defenseman drafted after the top ten to prove my point do I? I didn't say it was likely just that it is possible. But yes I would've creamed my pants If I was a Nashville fan. |

Because here at hockeybuzz, we're all about fact-based opinions, right? I mean, go read the comments. The odd guy, usually someone who just recently joined the site, writes a long post with facts. Regulars then proceed to mock him and he learns the real meaning behind hockeybuzz the hard way. Your own blogger is one of the worst for it. - woopstash
Reasonable posts and conversation happen here a lot. Dont judge us by out blogger. Hes a tool. |

No you don't however Jones' is simply that good & is an elite d-man & over time, he'll prove it to everybody.
Now for some players I would say I could be wrong but not with Jones, he has too much going in his game & if you speak with every scout out there, he'd be one guy they'd have on their team in a heartbeat, unfortunately you can't since they're are also great players at different positions(Mackinnon, Barkov & Drouin) although i'm still not sold on Barkov).
If any team is going to have a bust, it's Florida & Barkov! |

NA translation of a euro players game always has risks. Work ethic can be an issue too. Look at Kovalev. Such a colossal waste. |

Both were good picks for their draft years.....Phillips is one of the best from his poop year, Berard....well.......would've been if not for Hossa's stick. |

When I used to play NHL 94, the trading system used to be incredibly rudimentary. You could trade players with a value rating +/- 3 away from the target player. For example, if a guy was a 71, and with him you could acquire a 68 or a 74 rated player and so on.
What I'd often do was this: start with a poopty player, and continue to trade up as I could. 61 gets a 64, 64 gets a 67, on and on and on until I turned my 61 rated asset into Steve Yzerman (97 or so). Good strategy when you're bored and have an insane amount of time on your hands, but you can see how it's totally impractical.
That's kind of how I feel with the Oilers defense. We're not going to improve our D by trading Smid for the next rung above, and Petry for the next rung above, constantly looking for replacements. We need to add to what we've assembled.
If you recall:
Jason Smith became Pitkanen, Pitkanen became Cole, Cole became POS.
Stoll and Greene became Lubo, Lubo became Whitney.
These sorts of "upgrade" trades don't often work imo. |

Is he Zach Bogosian, Erik Johnson or Drew Doughty? Is he Luke Schenn, Victor Hedman or Alex Pietrangelo? Cam Fowler, Tyler Myers or Jack Johnson?
High picked Dmen traditionally are far more risky than high picked forwards. Generally in the top 5 the worst you're getting is like Nathan Horton or Thomas Vanek. |

Ya you never seem to know how they'll translate their game to NA. With Barkov though, I dont think work ethic will be a problem. Seems like he is a hardworking and responsible forward. Finnish forwards always seem though hard to predict coming into the NHL. Remember the trio that were supposed to do big things a little while go? Korpikoski is the only one I can even name right now..
Hope Barkov does well though |

the scouting report on jones is extremely similar to e johnsons.
think he might have a better head for the game, but johnsons skating skillz are stronger.

I don't think he'll ever add the physicality to his game that people expect. He wasn't overly physical in Junior where he was the same size as a lot of guys and now he's expected to learn how to phyiscally dominate against men and not 5'8 17yr olds that weigh 161lbs? Same problem Hedman had.
The best thing for Jones would be to go back to Junior. Hell, that'd be the best thing for basically every kid drafted most years. Just because a player has the skill level doesn't mean they're physically able to play. |

E Johnson was great up until his golfing incident. Ruined his knee and his career. |
