I don't like this move. Much better free agents next year. Once again, the Flyers will be fighting to get cap compliant for years to come. I would rather have 5 more years of Matt Read than 5 years of Vinny. - PhillySportsGuy
Just my opinion: I would have just rather rolled with youth, myself. |

how he acquired bryz is as bad as anything. it set the stage for failure. ed can jump up and down all he wants, but homer has to say, 'if you want him, let me acquire him the right way'...and that means reading the mkt properly and negotiating like a pro instead of the amateur hour we witnessed. that makes sense. - isaiah520
That's beside the point. The blame for the Bryzaster falls at Snider's feet. |

I don't think Coburn in going anywhere unless they get a great return. It is Meszaros who will be dealt. Probably for a 3rd or 4th round pick. - MBFlyerfan
Probably for a conditional 7th rounder that goes up a round for every 20 games he plays for his new team. So if he plays 82 games it becomes a third rounder. |

anybody else think the Flyers will move Talbot. I think him and his 1.75 cap hit will be gone. With the addition of Lecavalier the Flyers are now loaded down the middle with Giroux, Schenn, Couturier and last years 1st round pick Scott Laughton. - 215mike
I think Talbot stays as long as he can recover from his injury. He's a good 4th line/PK guy and leader in the room. His first year was an anomaly. |

Only one poster mentioned dealing Talbot. - MBFlyerfan
Talbot's effort and production are very high in relation to the amount of cap space he occupies. I don't tihnk he's going anywhere. I think a defenseman and one of the young(ish) forwards will be dealt. I would expect it to be Meszaros and Read who go, but in this as in all things, it is my idiot opinion and I reserve the right to be wrong.

definitely do not want to part with Talbot - huge role player, great penalty killer. - flyersfan51
i agree but i think the Flyers can replace him with cheaper younger players. I think Laughton can replace him and provide more of a offensive upside. The only downside is would you wanna put Laughton on a 4th line minutes. |

Laughton (if he makes the team) will start on the 4th line, which is not unusual for many young players. |

My thoughts on Lecavalier:
Pros: Very good player to have; scores, hits, wins faceoffs, brings leadership and veteran presence to the locker room plus good price at $4.5 million per.
Cons: I'm not a fan of the 5 year deal (although I understand that without the additional years the cap hit would be higher). Lecavalier is an old 33. He came into the league at 18 and peaked at 26 plus has missed a good chunk of games the past few seasons.
I just feel like this signing represents the lack of organizational direction the Flyers have shown. It seems like they jumped on him because he was a big name and a good player. I feel like this strategy isn't working. After all, we haven't won a Cup in almost 40 years. - NickTheKid87
Re- organizational direction.....Vinny replaces the vet leadership lost in both Briere and Jagr.....I thinks it's fair to say the Flyers banked to much on Schenn and Couturier last year.....let these kids develop...give it some time...be patient....that's a technique that the Flyers brass and lot of their fans need to adopt. |

why are you guys always trying to trade Coburn. Yes he's very frustrating has the talent to be so much better. But he still is pretty good and is very reasonable in todays market at 4.5mil. - 215mike
because I think I'd rather have Ference for 3.0-3.5 than Coburn at 4.5. Our D makes too much money, plus I think Gus is ready for 20 minutes a game. I thougth he was ready last year. |

The near $21mm in cap space next year, combined with a probable rise in salary cap will likely allow them to keep Giroux, Coururier and Schenn, if not Read.
If you read the blog, all the questions you asked are answered. You also forget the near $5mm in LTIR relief from Pronger. Considering your team just gave 4 years to a 34 year old that's never been a top line player without Crosby and made Letang the 3rd highest cap hit in the NHL among defensemen, you might want to consider moving out of that glass house before tossing any stones. - Jsaquella

I think your underestimating the raises that Couturier and B Schenn might get. If they have productive year they could get really expensive really fast.

The Flyers were going to sign an aging vet, if you want to say that 33 is aging, so they signed Vinny. I like the move. So be it.
As we know as Flyer fans, Homer will always try to make the team better. With that, i'm not a fan of constant roster turnover. But, what he has done for the time being is sign a few older guys instead of trading away the young core.
When was the last time a Flyers team had this much youth? In some ways it remind me of the 80's. It's still going to take time to see if these moves pan out. Patience is needed.
I do not like the length of both contracts but to get someone you have to give a little.
Right now, i would hope to trade either Mez or Grossmann, although i would prefer Mez. The Flyers have enough youth to take both of their spots if needed.
I would also hope they would sign Gagne, but we shall see as Bill has pointed out.
It's never a dull moment in Flyersville and Flyersbuzz.
The bickering over the cap and blaming one owner simply stupid but hey it's a message board, it's all fun and games.
Cheer Rio, everyone...happy holiday to all |
