Edler is not a similar guy to Mez. Mez isn't even fit to skate on the same ice Edler does. He's about 3 tiers above Mez. He hits hard, a skates smoothly, he can quarterback a PP with the best of them, and he plays shutdown D. There is just no comparison between him and Mez. There are no health questions. He had a back problem, he fixed it. Some nights he feels a little stiff, but like Timonen he battles through it because he's a warrior.
- JAKEw1234

i hear you, i just don't want to trade youth for someone of questionable health. my comparisons are more meant to bring to light how with one guy everybody thinks he's done, but because this other guy is bright and shiny it's okay to take the risk on his health and trade away youth to get him.

i'd rather steer clear of that

I said rarely. If I were grading out Homer's GM skills, I would give him very high marks for trades.

And Eminger did (with Downie) bring in everyone's favorite Carle.

See but that trade's a joke that they wouldn't even consider. You have to give to get. Luckily for us, Read can be replaced and more on the PK and PP by Vinny, on the 2nd line by Simmonds, and on the 3rd line by Gagne. Gagne also fits much more nicely on a 3rd line than Simmonds or Read. Coburn would obviously be replaced and more by Edler. The idea is to package Read and Coburn in order to get an upgrade on Coburn. Edler is that upgrade, and I'd more than readily trade Coburn and Read for him, but I expect it will also cost picks.
- JAKEw1234

See I agree with your central thesis...I just think you over value Edler thats all

Back issues can be funny.

If they're chronic, they're even funnier.

I have chronic back issues. They're the worst thing in the world.

You conveniently left out the Pronger trade which is arguably the biggest of Holmgren's tenure...
- phillydentist

I didnt't leave it out I just forgot about it.
What exactly makes that a bigger trade the moving Carter or Richards?

Additionally does anyone think they get to the finals if they don't make that trade?

If you have a chance to trade Lupul\Sbisa and picks for a first ballot hall of famer that , at that time, you still think has a few years left as a number one you do that trade every time.

That was a good trade. Remember when Pronger took us to the finals in his first year here? And when he was named our captain? And how he's still an off ice leader, despite being permanently injured? Ya that's why.
- JAKEw1234

I wasn't crazy about the trade when it was made.

I absolutely hated the contract when it was announced.

And I think you under value him. He's a premier defenseman. and like I just posted, the reported cost is a roster player, an elite prospect, and 2 more +'s (probably picks). Of course, I'm sure this price could be worked so that elite prospect isn't part of it, as we could offer 2 very good roster players now and probably 3 or more picks.

Im not arguing that but signing 30 plus players to long term deals doesn't make it a bad deal if that player is still contributing..

What I don't get is people that seem to think the Flyers trade youth for age...

The point you were trying to make was Holmgren doesn't trade youth for aged veterans and left out the biggest trade that countered it. Whether the trade was good or bad, I am not commenting.

And absolutely getting Pronger was bigger than either the Carter or Richards trades. Arguing that is just insane.

The Flyers just don;t like to leave any open cap space. They see 2M available and say "How can we fill it?"

With edler still possibly on the market the flyers should definitely go after him. Also see Tampa is looking for defense through trade. Maybe they would want meszaros back. Then we can still look into coburn to Edmonton. Maybe for dubnyak and a pick.

Timonen. Schenn
Streit. Edler
Grossmann. Gustafson.

Fair enough.
1. Pronger trade (youth for age)
2. 4 other major trades (age for youth)

Based on what?

Pronger was by far the biggest , most established player they got in a trade.
Trading Carter and Richards in the same day got them by far the biggest return of any trade he has made and changed the shape of the team.

You could make a case for either but to say one is clearly bigger than the other I just don't see it.

That's not a bad thing at all.. You don't win a cup for having space under the cap..
You win a cup by trying to bring in as many of the types of players you think your team needs to win a cup.

IMO. Homer got the most he possibly could for Carter and Richards at that point. The longer a player is on the market, the less the return will be. They become less desirable.[/img]

Maybe our disagreement is from semantics.

IMO, the Pronger trade is bigger than either the Richards or Carter trades.

You seem to be saying the Carter AND Richards trades combined are bigger. I would agree there.

It makes it difficult to make in season moves. It also forces them to do radical things like trade Gagne for Walker. Or trade a top 6 forward for Carcillo.

Bill,

Everyone is saying that it is best to put a speedy winger on Vinnie's line, but most are thinking Schenn and Simmonds. I think Read is a better fit. Who on the current roster do you like to start with Vinnie?

- TheGreat28

FWIW I agree with you.
Schenn-Lacavalier-Read
Talbot-Couturier-Simmonds

Good balance of size, speed, skill and 2 way play on each line.
