They sign Elias until he's 40, but we're still crazy for signing Lecavalier until he's 38 - JAKEw1234
Don't try to make sense of it, man -- the hypocrisy that the Flyers are subjected to is enough to drive you crazy.
Somebody is going to give David Clarkson six years at $5.5 million or more.
Paul Holmgren signed Scott Hartnell for six years at $4.75 million.
But Paul Holmgren and the Flyers are the worst things ever.

Patrik Elias signs a three-year extension that will take him to age 40, at $5.5 million per. It's an over-35 contract. But since Lou Lamoriello gave it, it's a great deal.
Paul Holmgren signs Mark Streit to a four-year contract that will take him to age 39, at $5.25 million per. It's an over-35 contract. But since Paul Holmgren gave it, he should be fired. |

It's not so much the cap hit that bothers me as much as the years. And though Holmer may not be the worst, he's certainly right up there with the years and the NMC's. |

HA! Yeah. But it's that kind of idiocy that drives me crazy -- listening to some people talk, you'd think that Paul Holmgren is this crazy man who does stuff 29 other GMs would never, ever, ever do.
It's just not true. It's so ridiculous at times, it's asinine. |

That'll be the narrative -- I'm checking Twitter now, and not a single writer who has reported the Elias signing has said one negative thing about it. Not one.
I know for a fact that those some -- not all, but some -- of those same writers were KILLING Paul Holmgren and the Flyers for...signing an over-35 player to four years.

Lou has some cup rings on his résumé ... Which gives him some leeway. |

And I'll be the first to admit he has earned, and deserves, that leeway.
But at the same time, his team missed the playoffs, too. If you believe what you read -- and we shouldn't always do that -- but if you do, then their farm system is one of the worst in hockey.
They signed Travis Zajac to an eight-year, $46 million deal. TRAVIS ZAJAC.
I got nothing against Travis Zajac, but come on. His high in points: 67. THREE YEARS AGO. He had 20 points in 48 games last year. Twenty points!
If Paul Holmgren did something like that, he'd be getting killed EVERY SINGLE DAY. |

dupuis signing for 4 mill until he's 38 is a hometown discount the likes of which the flyers will never see
lecavalier for 4.5 until he's 38 is the embarrassment of the league |

Homler does do stuff that 29 other GM's wouldn't do. Sometimes it's crazy. other times, perhaps not so much. Time will tell. I don't believe either Vinny or Street gave us a desirable town discount. Homler overpaid for both. Maybe it'll work out. It still remains to be seen.
No other Gm was prepared to give Vinny 5 years at that price, hence, he's here.
No other team was willing to give Straight 4 years at that price, hence, he's here.
What I do know is by the time you're into your 30's, your ceiling has been met and your skills will not be getting better. By the time you're 35, those skills, either because of age or injury (potential or a culmination of those throughout the years), will slide even quicker. Therefore, as a GM, you're paying good money and taking up valuable space during those years for an asset that is quickly depreciating.
IMHO, never a good idea. |

You're wrong.
You should read this before saying that no other team would've given Vincent Lecavalier what the Flyers did.

We don't really know all the details, and Streit's rights were traded to us. No other GM was able to even talk to him, so we don't know what they were or weren't willing to offer. |

He means that $4.5 mil for Vinny Lecavalier would be how much you expect him to take for a home town discount. |

It is frustrating when Shero and Lou get applauded for the deals they sign Dupuis, Elias, et al to and Homer get crucified. I do like that mostly Craig Button and someone else from TSN have supported the recent moves by Homer (Getting Mason, Vinny, etc). Even the Carter trade to CBJ was a great return. One of the them brought up Bobrovsky was seriously considering a move to the KHL and stated if that happened, Homer wouldn't have looked foolish.
I feel Homer is an above-average GM maybe if you had to rank them somewhere around 10-12. Of course, its hard because smaller-market teams have different team imposed budgets to work with.
Homer has won more trades than he lost and has tried to bring in free agents with the idea to win the Cup. He has utilized signing overage junior players and undrafted free agents like Gus and Read and going to the KHL to find Bob to make up for trading away draft picks.
Bryz was a mistake but I think some of that also falls on Lavi and Snider. If they employed a tighter defensive gameplan like we saw at the end of the season, Bryz may not have been exposed as much. Bob could have been in a mistake but we will see what happens in the next few seasons- how Bob does moving forward with the bigger contract and higher expectations, how Mason does, and how Stolarz progresses. |
