Not up for the detailed debate today. But we must be watching two different teams to think his defensive game isn't anything special. - BulliesPhan87
I've watched him a lot...he shows flashes, like his work against Malkin, but I've also seen him make a number of rookie type mistakes defensively and he's poor at faceoffs...his stats also show defensive weakness. So, while I'm not trying to say he's a disaster out there, people seem to significantly overrate his current defensive prowess imo. He's young enough to have time to develop and evolve into that kind of player, but he has a long way to go before all the Selke level talk is justified. |

Incorrect...there are lingering issues with his back...as recently as December he was considering (more) surgery, after the other one that you think "fixed" him. With Philly being a lightning rod for defensman injuries, tha last thing I want to expend considerable assets for is a player with a chronic back issue...these things usually don't get better over time on their own. If he can be had for a package of a prospect or two (not Morin) and 2nd/3rd rd pick, or in the of Mez/Coburn sacrifice scenario, I'd take a chance, but not for the top kids on the roster. - exlund
Read is 27, Coburn 28, and Edler 27. I'd give Read, Coburn, and picks/mid level prospects in a heartbeat for him. And again, he only has to last like 5 years. And like he said himself, he's able to play through many of the back problems. |

I agree the Streit deal is risky only b/c its a 35+ contract. That contract worries me but Streit has played only a few more career games under his belt than Yandle who is 10 years younger. There shouldn't be much wear and tear on him. - phillydentist
Although he played in other leagues in Switzerland, it wasn't NHL caliber.
I hope you're right. |

Maybe...I'm not dead set against him...I just worry about overpaying for damaged goods. |

Huge trade in the works. Boston and Dallas close on a deal sending Tyler Seguin to Stars for Loui Eriksson. Other parts involved as well.

For Loui Eriksson? Wow I must've been either overvaluing Seguin or undervaluin Eriksson cause that sounds one-sided for the Stars. |

I don't think his defensive game is overrated at all. You're right, he does have a long way to go to being the Selke caliber player he can be (call it an opinion, if you want). But that should be expected, he's only played a season and a half in the NHL. |

While he is Vancouvers player, and the trade market is a seller's market, we do have some leverage here. With Edlers NTC now in play, it'll be harder for them to trade him. While I'm not sure he'd waive to go to Philly, I doubt he'd waive to go to a team like Florida or Tampa who are small market and consistently miss the playoffs. Edmonton is a possibility cause they are a bigger market, but they too are consistently out of playoff contention. Out of the supposed suitors for Edler, Philly seems to be the spot to be this offseason, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is more willing to waive for us than to one of those teams. It's not much to go on, but it means there's a chance this may actually be a FAIR trade instead of a one-sided deal. To me, Coburn, Read, and a higher pick or two (2nd/3rd round) is a fair value for Edler. |

I think...it depends on whether you think Tyler Seguin's soft or not.
If you think he's soft -- and the Bruins and Boston media have hinted that they do -- then you think he's likely never going to fulfill his potential, and the 67 point season he had last year is as good as it gets.
If you don't think he's soft -- and at his age, I think it could go either way -- then this is one of those deals that has a way of turning into a legend.

I believe we already had a lengthy conversation about him on the last blog's comments - JAKEw1234
NHL teams have a window of opportunity to sign these guys during training camps. A few teams always take advantage of it. (They could sign him if they like what they see & still send him back to Erie to further develop) |

But the Yotes were asking for a stupid amount seeing as the price for Weber was Coots + Schenn + a pick I believe. - JAKEw1234
Well, until we hear that a GM wants Coots for something worthy of this perceived value you think he has, it's just wishful speculation imo. |

I'm concerned about his supposed incredible lack of consistency, but not enough so that I think it wouldn't be worth it to at least offer a guy who was ranked in the 20s at one point a contract. If he doesn't pan out, then whatever. It's high reward, low risk. And if he pans into the Chris Stewart-esque player he apparently plays like, it'd be a huge win for us |

I have seen many Flyer fans describe his defensive game as being great or one of the best amongst the NHL's younger players...and the word "Selke" has been mentioned many times in association with him...I just don't see that being justified at this time. |

He wasn't on a good team even with the sensation Connor McDavid, I would give him a shot, it's not costing them a pick & he's got more development to do so it would be something for down the line which is fine. Based on the last 2 drafts they have taken many players who won't be ready right away. |
