Subtract Mezaros and add a couple 2nd rounders? Coburn carries a $4.5 mil hit, and Read carries a 900k hit. That adds 2 roster players for only 500k more than Edler's cap hit.

there also seems to be a massive hunt on for defensemen around the league yet Ballard and Gilbert were both bought out. These guys were on unconditional waivers for 100 bucks. If neither of these two guys were worth it at less dollars than Booth, and defensemen are in demand, why didn't they get picked up?

The only way Booth goes on LTIR this season is if he gets injured again and is legitimately hurt. They won't put him on there just to free up cap space.

There are only a few options in which I can see Edler actually being traded.

Edler to Pittsburgh for Crosby
Edler to Chicago for Toews, Kane+
Edler to Tampa Bay for Stamkos
Edler to Philadelphia for Giroux, B. Schenn+
Edler to New York for Tavares, Hamonic

Otherwise, no deal.

contract doesn't get voided if he holds out and demands a trade, they can just suspend him and dodge the cap hit until he changes his mind. In the meantime you'd have to find another starter and then figure out what to do with them if Luongo decided to report and play. Miserable situation.
