I hope he goes back to the KHL. I don't want to have even the slightest of chances that he ends up somewhere in the East this year and starts playing well. It would be too much to endure.

With the type of cap hit Briere was carrying, I think he was pretty much a sunk cost. I don't think a team would have taken his contract and given up any assets to boot.

Cap Floor teams would've loved Briere. Large Cap Hit with little actual money going his way. Granted Montreal is not a cap floor team but even a 3rd round pick that Holmgren would spend on another enforcer would've been fine.

Yes sir. 4th line guys who play 6-10 minutes a game are almost useless when they are constantly going to the box. Not to mention Powe has hands of cement.

With Giroux, Lecavalier, and Hall Flyers should be much improved at the dot this year. Very underrated aspect of the game. Losing faceoffs poses a lot of problems, especially losing defensive zone draws.

I love the fact you can have Hall on the wing for a big defensive faceoff incase one of the other two get kicked out of the faceoff circle. Seems like Hall does the little things right and is real responsible in his own end. I like the signing.

When the core that won those cups is no longer playing for them...and not to argue the point, but there was quite a few finals appearances to go along with those cups.

Possibly. Briere was a good soldier during his time in Philly. Everyone had nothing but great things to say about him. I think the Flyers also wanted to do him a solid in letting him choose where he wanted to play.

Exactly. Way deep down the middle all over again. I know some of these guys are comfortable at either center or wing, but most are natural centers. Way too many on this roster.

The expiration date will be when Lou pays $40M for 2 years of mediocre goaltending. Because of the Bryzgalov fiasco, any move the Flyers make will be met with some doubt for a little while.

Yup. Hall is the type of role player every good team needs. I liked the signing as well. For 600k it was a no brainer.

Nothing is a guarantee. But I believe when all the smoke clears from the 2013 NHL draft, Jones will end up being the best player. Just a gut feeling.

That core of those Devils team is gone, has been for a while. Elias and Brodeur are the last 2 holdovers. Stevens, Nediermayer, and Daneyko are long gone.
As for Finals, Flyers have been to 3 Conference Finals and 2 SC Finals since the Devils went on their streak, so I put no stake in anything but Cups.

Just seems like a log jam. G, Vinny, Coots, Schenn, Talbot, Hall, Laughton in the wings. And yes, I realize some of those also play wing...just not naturally.

Being realistic is not doom and gloom. Unfortunately, fans only think of and hope for the best case scenario and that's the problem. Things happen in sports or life in general. Just see what the Flyers go through each season. Teams are giving out these extensions based on best case scenarios of their young superstars. You kind of get cornered into regret and disappointment doing that. I'm sure Lecavalier's huge long term contract brought Tampa fans joy too when he signed. They just bought him out at age 33 while he's still productive. I understand it's because of the new CBA etc but thats the reality of sports. Giroux will be 34 at the end of his contract so expect the last few years of his extension to be an overpayment for a declining player. Things happen and most of the time for the worse whether it's injuries, a new CBA, etc, etc, etc.

Players in the NHL routinely play at a high level well into their 30's. What's not being taken into account here, is the salary escalation that is going to happen. 7-8 years from now, an 8M salary will be like 4M today. No to mention that in the middle of the contract, as salaries escalate, the Flyers will have Giroux at a reasonable cost. What's the alternative? Signing another bridge deal, and then letting him test Free Agency? What do you think it will cost you then, as other teams are brought into it. And a bidding war ensues? How'd that work out for Nashville with Weber?

Great trade by NJ. Smart move.

The cap # for this lineup, with Pronger on LTIR and including 600k for Wellwood and $100 for Bartulis, is $56.75 million. This does not include Emery and Gustafsson. Assuming 2 million for Emery and 1.1 million for Gustafsson, the total cap # is $59.85 million which would leave ample space for call-ups and future acquistions.

That Cap number is off. It would be much higher then that. With that lineup, the Flyers would be close to the upper limit, and possibly into using LTIR.
