What's not being taken into account here, is the salary escalation that is going to happen. 7-8 years from now, an 8M salary will be like 4M today. - MJL
That's not true. When Vinny signed his extension a decade ago for 7.8/yr avg, that was the going rate for a top tier forward. The going rate hasn't changed much since then.
10 years ago, the national debt was 5 trillion. Today it is 17 trillion. 10 years from now it will likely be 30 trillion. The US economy won't likely get any better just because time passes by. Things could get worse.

If Emery is indeed the choice, what happens if Mason reverts back to Columbus form, and Emery's hip doesn't allow him to handle being a full time starter. - PLindbergh31
Exactly, I don't think Emery should be their choice. I like Halak, but as MJL and Jsaq pointed out he has a long medical list. And while I think Thomas would be the best to get, his ego will have him demanding big dollars. Don't know what they will do. |

The problem with you theory is that NHL revenue and US Economy are not, and have not been directly proportional.
Yea, the economy has been pretty poopty, yet the NHL continues to produce records in total revenue. |

The problem is, there is no clear cut solutions. Unfortunately the Flyers are painted into a corner with the goaltending situation. I think the best hope is that Mason finds his game. He's got the size, quickness, and has very good puck handling ability. I believe the problem is between his ears.... Which could be more problematic than mechanical issues. I think we would all agree that Philly isn't the best place to try and iron out mental issues between the pipes.
Very small sample size, but hard not to like what Mason showed in the games he played. |

There is no such thing as being too deep down the middle. It is a very important position on the ice. - MJL
Hall should've been signed instead of Rosehill. Rosehill is the contract that is unnecessary and excessive. The timing of Hall's signing though might be a hint that some center(s) might be leaving in a trade. I just hope Holmgren doesn't get taken in any trades this offseason. He's done well so far on the whole. |

A question to everyone (Bill you too)...
The Adam Hall signing, to me, is a great signing. It does present a log jam at center. Everyone seems to think that Laughon wont be up with the club this year, but what if he isnt the one that wont be wear a Flyers uni....
What are the odds that we move Couts in a trade for a d-man, and slide Laughton in at 3rd line C? Not that I am pushing for it, but I could just see something like this actually happening... |

Sure it's true. Salaries have always escalated, and continue to escalate. If Giroux were allowed to go into an off season as a Free Agent, what do you think it would cost them.
And the problem is as always, that some look at cap hits, not salaries. Cap hits were kept lower for top player due to the back diving deals that are no longer allowed. Look at the top Free Agents that signed last year. Remove the two or 3 low years on the back end, and see what their cap hits would be. That is going to continue to escalate.
Take Parise for instance. If you remove the last 3 low years of his deal designed to lower the Cap hit. His Cap hit is 9.4M. |

I don't know about the records in total revenue. All I know is that hasn't translated into an increase for top tier players in the last decade. And it is wrong to assume the next decade will be any different. |

I agree. My only issue with Emery is if Mason does falter, can Emery handle a full work load with his hip condition. |

Salaries for top players have not escalated in the past decade. Compare Vinny's last big contract from 10 years ago to those of Suter/Parise/Giroux. They are very similar. |

No reason you cant get the same production that Bryz gave you. Odds are it could be better with the goalie situation. |

Here is my thing with Mason. Sometimes people dont like to be in the spotlight. They dont like added pressure, and they do terrible when they are the central figure.
And sometimes its the exact opposite. Look at Mason his rookie year... coming into a new city, playing under the spot light. Calder Trophy. Look at Mason in his WJC games.. outstanding. Maybe playing in a city that loves hockey, and being the central figure is exactly what a person like Steve Mason needs to succeed. Maybe he wasnt able to get into games in CBJ... I dont know. What I do know is that he was outstanding in his small showing here last season.
Crossing my fingers.... |

I think trading Couturier would be a mistake. While I'm not ready to proclaim him a future Selke winner, I do think a consistent 20 goal scorer and a very solid defensive game is pretty much a certainty with him. Think J. Staal light.
My concern is since Couturier currently has a very small cap hit, if the Flyers do trade him how do they get equal value? I suppose they could package Coburn with him. |

Right but Rosehill's contract still counts toward the 50 limit. Just unnecessary when you can call up a goon from the AHL.
