HA! I love that guy even more after today -- Dave Nonis, Lou Lamoriello and now Peter Chiarelli have lost their damn minds!
I got nothing against Jarome Iginla -- he's going to the Hall of Fame -- but Good Lord! He's not a $6 million player anymore, and you didn't have to pay that because Horton and Clarkson didn't even come in that high!
Just because it's for one year doesn't mean that salary isn't ridiculous -- it's insane! - AllInForFlyers
I'm just kidding man. I'm one of the most critical of Holmgren. I think he's done pretty well thus far.

And Pierre Lebrun stated that Clarkson left money on the table and could've signed for more with another team. But I was told this morning that salaries for top players aren't escalating. I love all the battles I had with posters trying to explain why deals that are labeled bad that Holmgren made, aren't bad. You seem to be taking up that cause. Saving me from having to do it. I appreciate that!

Rosehill was drafted in 2003, he's played 83 NHL games. I'm not sure he's really solid at anything.
In watching him play last year, the small sample he played ok, but I would prefer a guy who is more versatile. - PLindbergh31

Iggy's deal is bonus heavy, but it's still pretty much a guaranteed...he gets close to $2mm in base, and then like $3mm if he plays ten or 15 games, then additional bonuses for goals, etc.
EDIT
@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Iggy deal: $1.8 M base salary, $3.7 M games played bonus, $500,000 goal scoring/team playoff performance: total $6 M |

More versatile how? As far as the PK is concerned? They have plenty of players who can do that. Every player has a role. And I'll remind you, Rosehill can be removed off of the team at pretty much anytime the Flyers want to do so.

Most important thing to do is to draft well and develop players. Free agency just costs too much. It's good to fill a need or two but that's about it. |

Versatile meaning a guy who can move up and down the lineup. If Rosehill is in the lineup and there is an in game injury, he's pigeon holed to a 4th line role.
If you had a kid like McGinn for example on the 4th line, he's capable of moving up. |

If McGinn is capable of moving up, for a game, then so is Rosehill. Honestly, you don't add 4th line forwards to your team with the expectation that they have the ability to move up in the lineup. That's not realistic. They're 4th line players for a reason. If you have an in game injury, you simply double shift other players. That's a much better way of dealing with it.

I'd rather not carry him, either, but he's cheaper than Shelley and isn't a terrible 4th liner.
If they have to carry an "enforcer" Rather it be Rosehill than Newbury. Rosehill is younger(27 to 31), bigger (6'3" to 5'11") as somebody pointed out, Newbury has been a penalty machine in his limited NHL play. |

I don't feel like Iginlas deal is any different then Timonens from a one year stand point. Boston needs wingers, makes sense for one year. - stveshdy
I guess Boston thinks it's roster is pretty solid without many holes. With cap room available, adding Iginla for one year to take Horton's place makes sense to them.
Add Eriksson in the mix and they look pretty scary yet again. |

I'd rather have a player like Rosehill available, so other players don't feel the need to have to fight too often. Which is why Montreal added Parros.

Good signing for Boston. Only one year it's worth the risk. |

You're dead on about that stuff, because anybody who has ever studied business knows one thing: When in doubt, do not let the market dictate what you're going to pay.
Yes, it can be a little frustrating when Paul Holmgren deals for the rights of players before they hit free agency. But the reason you do that is because you want to set the salary that you want to pay, as best you can.
That's why you don't let guys you KNOW you want to keep enter the last years of their contracts as free agents. Anaheim screwed the entire league by letting both Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry enter their walk years, which means that every bit of leverage goes to the player.
If Bob Murray had done his job properly, he should've been able to lock both of them up to deals in the $7 million range. Instead, they both get $8-plus because now you gotta pay -- and that spreads around the league.
Paul Holmgren rarely lets players he wants to keep enter their walk year. Rightly or wrongly. And yes, the Bryzgalov deal burned him and the Flyers because he wound up negotiating against himself, which is the risk you take.
But the bigger risk is negotiating against multiple teams, because that's when you pay David Clarkson $5-plus million over 7 years, or watch Zach Parise walk away for free -- which is borderline criminal! |

I still don;t think a Rosehill or a Parros stops a Matt Cooke from taking a run at a Claude Giroux or Thomas Plekanec |

I suppose. Probably a moot point anyway. Rosehill most likely will be inserted when Laviolette sees fit. I'm sure he won't be playing all the time. He wasn't bad in the games he played last year. He actually did some nice things. |

We've had this conversation many times before. No it doesn't stop it from happening. But someone is going to have to stand up for teammates and fight on occasion. Montreal doesn't want Prust doing it as much as he had to last Season. 10 fighting majors in 48 games. That's too much. That's why they acquired Parros. And that's why the Flyers have Rosehill.

Thank goodness for the new CBA and the lowering of the cap. Maybe it will finally stop all of these absurd signings. |

Thank goodness we don't have to play Matt Cooke as often now. Much better chance for team....um I don't want to jinx us. Never mind. |

I don't doubt it -- desperation of continuous losing in a city where players don't want to go is just as inflationary to salaries as large-market teams.
I'm always amazed at how people curb-stomp the Flyers for deals they make when maybe the single-biggest salary escalator in the last CBA was Edmonton offer-sheeting Thomas Vanek.
