are you giving up Strome plus in that deal for Ryan? Because if you aren't you're not getting him and if you are, you may be severely disappointed in 2 years. - Isles_since_6
Ottawa has a Ryan Strome in their system? There are other prospects besides him.
However, since Garth could only get a 3rd rounder(CC) for a 1st rounder(Nino), no, there is no way he could have pulled off a deal like that.
Pretty much sums up my whole argument about Garth.

I would think since they really have to trade Miller at this point, Vanek would be part of that deal.
I see them trading Miller or Miller and Vanek, I dont see them trading just Vanek.
XxNYIxX - XxNYIxX
I understand that but....We could trade dehaan, Anders Lee, Poulin and a prospect and a first round pick 2015 and second round 2016 for Vanek and ryan miller and perhaps few picks. We don't have to resign ryan miller but just making it sweeter to land vanek |

wow. You are seriously dense.
Clutterbuck plus 3rd for disgruntled underachieving 1st. Completely the same as trading a 1st, top rookie on the team, plus another top prospect for Ryan.
You don't think any conversation Anaheim would have had with the Isles about Ryan would not have included "not without Strome"?
keep in mind, this is not about whether or not you want to trade them someone else, it's about competing against another team's offer and meeting Anaheim's price. |

Buffalo is beginning a rebuild. Strome would be a demand. It'd prob be no deal without him. Maybe.nelson bit I'd think they'd start with him. |

I will say this - if we were to be able to put a package together for Vanek that didn't involved Strome, Nelson, or Reinhart, and included draft picks and prospects I'd do it in a heartbeat and consider this offseason a huge success.
I'm not saying it's success right now at all, just not a failure as it's just begun and there will be options available in a trade. I don't think we're doomed if it stays as it is, but if we put together a 1st, Anders Lee and Dehaan, I'd pull the trigger and I think the Sabres would be happy with it. - Isles_since_6
If they'd do that I wouldn't think twice about it. Just don't think that'd be who they would ask for? If they're getting offers they'll take the best one and if that winds up being the best one then then so be it. It could be? There is also the problem with Reiger probably not wanting him in the conference? Just a possibility. |

I'd wait...why give up assets when he's a free agent next year...Sign Grabovsky for 1 year $4 million...his market might have dried up... |

Love the Bouchard move. He's fast and plays with heart. He will put up 65 points playing with Tavares and Moulson. Nabby was best FA available today and we resigned him. We locked up hamonic on the cheap basically. It was a good day. The team is better then they were 2 months ago. I know we are probably a great goalie, d man and forward away from being a contender but the isles slowly keep getting better. I like the trend and don't want to see a trade for a guy that doesn't work out.
Clutterbuck,Bouchard,Regin are light years better then boyes, aucoin , reasoner. Still think we need another defenseman and then this team could have a better year than this last season. Stop flipping out guys, just because we didn't trade for Ryan doesn't mean snow didn't try. |

Someone will make a man-boobs joke any second now....
Not really, adequate depth forward. He's big and slow, plays with less physicality than you'd want out of a big man. I wouldn't count on him doing much of anything for you guys but you never know. He actually wasn't too bad with this most recent stint with Isles. - eichiefs9

I think there's a difference in value between Ryan and Vanek - Ryan is 26 with 2 years left on a 5mil cap hit, Vanek has one year at 7 mil cap hit and is 29. I think with the higher cap hit and one year left on his deal, and being 3 years older it hurts his value in comparison and makes it a bit easier for us to offer something other than Strome/Nelson
That being said, in the 1st day of drastic overpayments, the Isles would likely have competition. They might offer more, Buffalo may want him moved to the west. Tough to say, only guessing on the value we'd have to give for him but I am guessing less than Ryan

I don't know about light years better, but I think there's the potential for it to be better. Tough to say for sure but it does feel like a slight improvement

Dense is believing whats happened so far is a real improvment, with a sprinkle of denial. Dense is thinking we will improve enough to take the next step in a conference that surely will be tougher while riding the back of an aging goalie who ran out of gas in a 48 game season.
Its funny how some of you defend garth for every move AND non move he makes.
Any players we dont get are all tainted in some way. Nino was quoted saying he didnt hear directly from the isles they were unhappy or shopping him. Garth has now screwed up two 1st round picks(bailey), arguably add okposo and had to deal one away for a lesser veteran character player. Oh, and a 3rd pick.
So now we arent even getting the most of our draft picks, garths only strength, and when you factor our cheap owner and our mediocre coach, you get a team that is trying to operate from a position of deficiency in too many areas.
Expecting constant improvemnet when you operate any business this way is way beyond dense.
