Really it's just a hunch... I tried to ignore this feeling with lindros, then Richards and carter then bryzgalov now Giroux , these big deals always bite them in the ass whether its the cap, the player gets hurt the media catches them having a threesome with another players wife and Lauren hart, whatever meanwhile they're lacking at the positions that win cups, defense and goaltending. - JoeRussomanno
So you're against the moves they've made, not based on the actual merits of the moves themselves. But due to some of the bad luck they've had in the past. Some other moves didn't work out. So these won't either. Do I have that correct?

I think you make some valid points. I just don't think the Flyers are going to sit still after not making the playoffs. They upgraded without having to trade any pieces. - stveshdy
Besides... Homer likes this team as it is... Until he doesn't. |

When I first joined this site I was pretty optimistic toward my view of the team. Things kind of changed for me over the last few years, and at times I really start to lean toward, your point of view. It doesnt make us less of fans.
At times I do think the biggest issue is overvaluing players, and the organization getting caught up in its own hype. I will give their current approach a shot, with 50/50 optimism, but in my heart I kind of do believe more than a half ass rebuild will be needed to bring the required level of star power into the team, and not building it around mainly overpaid "secondary talent".
We will see. A nutter's thoughts. - flyer_nutter
I hate to admit this... But we're the new Chicago Blackhawks in that we won't win poop until the win now owner moves on and some less desperate and frugal running of the team takes place. Hey I hope I'm wrong but you go through this poop for 30 some years and you realize the koolaid is stale.

I'm worried on how we'll sign him, though. As of this point we have $12,689,405 of room next off season, and we have Schenn, Coots, Read, Mason, and Emery (if we choose to bring him back) all to resign with that money. If Coots and Schenn both get $3.5 (and personally I think that's low balling) then we have $5.7 mil to resign Read, Mason, and Emery. - JAKEw1234
I've made this point to you before. Read signed to a solid deal, has more value in a trade, then does Read on an expiring contract. All you need to sign him is the tagging space to do so. That's not an issue. I think your figures for Schenn and Couturier are high.

Not quite, there are merits to the moves but you have to give the team the benefit of the doubt and you can't tell me there are no doubts whatsoever... I mean we missed the playoffs and we give the captain Crosby-Malkin money... Gives me a bad vibe, hunch whatever you wanna call it but sometimes the team needs better intuition and I seriously question theirs right now. |

Ok, Joe. You are now the owner. Ed's dead and all the things that make the O&B the O&B are gone. Now what? Kinda like Penn State is now that Joe Pa's statue has been torn down. Show us the way Mr. Owner / GM / coach / and sage. |

Me as well. I wont pretend to be a 50 year fan. Im 22, and have watched them since 1997.
I do think that they overvalue the talent, and expect too much from "secondary players", or guys who are on the wrong side of their career. To get that true top talent, you sometimes do need a full out rebuild.
I am not at the complete point of saying that is what they need to do, but if this experiment with the current core doesnt work out in 4-5 years or so. I will be completely in that boat. |

Call it what you want but hearing the other day that within 10 years the Philadelphia flyers will not even be listed on the cup as that ring will be removed is very sobering for me and seeing what I percieve as the same old same old pisses me off a bit. I've been supportive and grateful but listening to people like Moat talk about giving up their season tickets and this team can't even dominate its own division these days starts pissing me off. |

I think if this core grows, and Morin and Hagg even come close to their potentials, then we'll be cup competitors. We'd have all the individuals. If we didn't even compete for one, then it'd be a coaching issue imo. We make up for not having a high pick every year by having one of the top drafting teams in the league. It's how we get guys like Richards, Giroux, and now hopefully Laughton in the 20's. In 2006, while teams that got guys like Toews, Kessel, Johnson, Backstrom, and Staal were the worst teams in the league, we were one of the top 10 teams in the league, and we still got Giroux despite of it. We got ATLEAST the 2nd best player to come out of that draft (Idk if you view Toews above G), and we won while doing it. With a good drafting team like the Flyers have, we can win every year and still find skilled guys. |

Is this the vibe down in Philadelphia? I have never been and dont pretend to know.
Whats sobering to me a little bit is this, and yes of course it must be taken with a grain of salt. Talking to other fans of teams around the league, frankly this team is a laughing stock. Overpaying for players on the wrong side of the career, panic trades, and just a headless chicken approach.
I'll defend them in real life to the end, but at times its good to take an outsider's point of view and take a look at it. Its just me, and I realise its effected the way I post on here, but essentially ever since the "new nhl" they have been making me kind more and more numb to being a fan. Again, I will stay loyal for life, but things do get weird at times. |

I really expect better of the people on this board than to make obviously false statements to support their pissing and moaning. Crosby has a cap-circumventing, guaranteed contract that far exceeds Giroux's in terms of total money that was signed under the old CBA. The only reason his cap hit is below $10 million is because of the phony years tacked on at the end. Malkin is making a full $1.25 million than Giroux is. Giroux got the same deal as Getzlaf, because that's the market value for top forwards now, and Giroux chose not to give Philly a discount. |

You're probably right about Read. And if Schenn or Coots has a break out season this year (And with Lecavalier as his center, I give Schenn a good chance at it), then my number is low. But you could also be right about Schenn and Coots, too. It all depends on how they do this year, which is why I'd prefer to extend them this summer. Don't get me wrong, I do really like Read and him only fitting on our 3rd line is an indication of how we do, in fact, have one of the deepest top 9's in the whole league. I just worry that our balance of defensive salary vs offensive salary is off. |

No 'star' level players with any history of real production. Has to be 'replacement-level'. Matt Walker for example. |
