Holmgren took over the worst team in the NHL and had them making deep playoff runs within a year or two. Amaro took over the World Champions and each year they progressively got worse.
The mistakes Holmgren has made are certainly out there for all to see, but he's earned more cache than Amaro has. - Jsaquella
he's had more spending leeway than amaro for a longer time. and it's much easier to rebuild in the NHL than in MLB if you can spend freely. amaro has made 3 big mistakes; 1) the first Lee trade (mgmt tied his hands); 2) howard contract; 3) rollins re-sign. now he is under pressure to keep the stadium full when he should be gutting the core because of the TV contract bidding. |

Sometimes I really feel like the only one who likes Homer as a GM. - JAKEw1234
I like Homer too, I think he gets a bad rap. He's not perfect, but overall he does a pretty good job.
Re the Phils: would like to see them clean house and get rid of Amaro and Manuel after the season. With that said, I would only move players in the last year of deals (Utley &Chooch) during the season and let thevnew GM decide what to do with the rest of the roster. |

1) agree
2) agree
3) agree
The Lee trade would've been easier to swallow if he had gotten a decent return, but and that's what scares me most if they decide to clean house.
Although, I like what Rube got back in the Pence and Victorino deals. |

The Howard extension I thought was early, but I get why it was done. I have no idea the need to resign Rollins. He was clearly declining at the plate, so of course a tree year contract with a vesting for a 4th year. They should have invested that money in Cuddyer and let Galvis play SS.
Papelbon needs to be traded, if he stays past the deadline would be a colossal blunder.

Yeah I agree, but getting that stud is hard. That very may be we love are defense because there is nothing we can do to improve it without gutting the core of our team and were not gonna do that - nonpoint22
I think having that stud would actually make our defense cheaper too. After Kimmo retires, if by theory we got Pietrangelo, then we could pair him with L Schenn. That would give us an amazing 1st pairing that is shut down, offensive, and could with out a doubt play upwards of 27 minutes a night, every night. Then we'd only need our last 2 pairs to play around 30 minutes a night. If we had a 2nd pairing that could play an effective 20 minutes a night (Think Gus and Gross), then we could honestly just play some cheap youth on the 3rd pairing (Maybe Lauridsen and MAB depending on health), because they'd only need to play 10-14 minutes a night. Then we could clear millions off of our cap that we currently have tied up in pretty good dmen because we need all of our defenseman to play pretty big minutes. Adding $1.5mil for replacing Kimmo with Piet could allow us to run a bottom 4 defense that costs us around $5.5 mil or so for 4 defenseman, instead of around $17-18 mil in our bottom 4 that we have at this moment. |

Didn't we try that with our Parent/Krajicek 3rd pair?
Edit: Not trying to rip you, it's a good idea. But the 3rd pairing can't just be a throw away pair, it still has to be good. They still need to be effective NHL caliber players. |

Agree on all 3. I would add they gave up way too much for Pence when they were a lock to win the division.
That said the Phil's won 102 games just 2 years ago. If not for lee blowing a 4 run lead they most likely get another ring. They are t as far away as everyone thinks. They'll have $50 million to spend next season. Have to get that RH RF power bat. |

They also likely would have won one in 2010 if they hadn't traded Lee. |

is that from "you can't handle the truth" ?
Can homer go to opening night with all these D men on the roster?
I'm worried that Mez's actually salary of 5.5M this season is scaring the GMs off. |

That call came from above RAJ. Ownership wouldn't foot the bill. I agree the return was poor. Ramirez and Aumont are both relievers in the bigs and Gillies is back in AAA. Not enough for Lee. |

I suppose, but Lauridsen (with 1 more year of development) definitely isn't just a throw away guy, he played pretty good last year. And MAB/Alt wouldn't exactly just be playing a filler, either. And eventually it would be Morin and Hagg on the 3rd pair, which definitely isn't just trying to fill roster space. |

Actually, the biggest difference between Holmgren and Amaro is that Amaro is an arrogant jerk. I think Homer is an above average GM (whereas Amaro is one of the worse) and I question some of his moves, but he is never condescending and obnoxious like "how dare you question me" Amaro. |
