Still think Meszaros is the one who goes. Pietrangelo is a pipedream at this point -- notice that McKenzie, Dreger and LeBrun haven't had a thing about St. Louis considering trade options. For that matter, Ek hasn't had it yet either. It's come from someone no one had even heard of this time a week ago. - bmeltzer
STL has $7.85M in cap space to re-sign AP and Stewart now. Stewart's salary was $3M last season. I doubt they can get AP for only $5M AAV. They will have to unload someone to re-sign both. A strong O.S. for AP just might force them to do what they wouldn't want to do. |

Bill. I have to say I disagree with starting streit mainly in the offensive zone. We got him to help move the puck out of our defensive zone. If he doesn't start many plays there then they are wasting what they got him for IMO. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Streit Usage - bmeltzer
Most telling stat for me is the way Streit's TOI plummeted in the PO's against the Pens... he ranked #6 amongst Islanders dmen in ES TOI and was trusted with virtually zero PK duties. Capuano clearly didn't want him on the ice anywhere near Malkin and Crosby.
Like Briere, Streit's already going to be a match up liability that Lavi will have to work around... and it's probably only going to get worse the older he gets. |

I'm not going to lie. I am a little worried about Streits inability to have a plus rating despite being matched up against the leagues worst in good situations.
My hope is that he will have a more balanced team than the Islanders. The Flyers now have 4 lines that I feel comfortable seeing take D zone draws. They also have 5 defenseman that I feel comfortable starting in the D zone. (Mez excluded).
I think the team will look to use Streit on the PP but limit his minutes to about 18-20 per game. No PK time unless absolutely necessary. |

At this point why not go after jaybo? A lot cheaper in terms of assets lost. And woul allow stl to resign their guys. They just have yo take meszaros back in the deal. Give them an extra 2 million. |

Still not sure of how to figure out Holmgren's grand scheme. - spatso
It's actually pretty simple. He doesn't want to trade the young nucleus he has built, unless he's getting a premium price for them in return.
I have no doubt that he kicked tires on every "available" defenseman, from Keith Yandle to Alexander Edler, and didn't find a deal he liked, so he decided to add Streit for small assets and add a needed puck moving component to the mix.

Excellent points as usual. I wasn't aware of Streit's ES and PK playoff minutes. Streit is a specialist. Very good on the PP, and a solid puck mover and carrier. The thing is for the term of the contract you would like him to be a little better in his own end. With the cap hit he carries it's tough to accept he will be glued to the bench on the PK as well as against other top lines at ES. |

Yes. Because people can't improve with age or by being in a different system.

I think the hope is that the all around play of the team will help offset Streits defensive deficiencies while still utilizing his offensive prowess.
I was never in favor of signing him. I thought a guy like Scuderi, while not an offensive guy, would have been the better selection. |

Are you guys really complaining about his cap hit. Did you see what guys were going for. Streit could have got like a million more in that market. Homer did great to lock him up before ufa. |

I think people are complaining that the Flyers paid a lot of money for a guy who is exclusively good with his stick and thats about it. He can shoot, pass and block shots with his stick. Don't ask him to skate and defend in his own end very often. |

No. I'm not complaining. The Flyers need the skill set he brings. Just would like him to play both sides of the ice. Also the length of the deal is too long. |

Lot of money, and long term for a 5-6 guy that has skills that are slowly declining. |

If he played well in his own end, he'd basically be a younger, better point producing Kimmo Timonen and would cost 6.5M-7M |

Totally agree. I understand he fits the need for the Flyers just don't like the contract length. |

We know. The Flyers are put in a tough position because they only have one true offensive talent on the back end and thats Kimmo. He's aging and getting ready to retire. When he moves on, they will have no one to play point on PP or deliver a good outlet pass. The team felt they had to get someone to do that. I just hope they can hide Streit enough and the overall team will help him avoid being a severe minus player.
If he is an even player with his PP prowess that will be a win for the Flyers. |

Don't get me wrong... I like him, but a shorter term would have been great.
I guess he held all cards... he wanted a long tern contract, and got it. |

7.5M x 7 yrs would probably get STL's attention. It's probably a 0.5M a year overpayment but that's the game.
Laughton, Coburn and 2 1sts (starting in 2015) would be my first offer in trade.
I don't give up any of the current roster core this way. Dumping Mez would free up enough space to accomodate the difference between Coburn and AP cap hits.

You will be arguing this point until the day Streit and Lecavalier's contracts are up. |

I think a lot of people are not in favor of the length of the contract more than the salary. When you look at some of the other deals being paid to thirtysomething veterans, the terms are taking a lot of them to almost 40- if not 40 years of age.
I would have liked the term to be a year less but I understand it why it needed to be done so Streit didn't get to July 1. He does provide them with an element that they needed. The fact that he has played a large part of his career in Europe on bigger ice surfaces in less physical games has helped signing him at 35. |
