But if you look at the 2003 draft, It was nearly impossible to not pick a decent player that year. There were only a couple of misses in the 1st round period. So while I'm not going to cherry pick players picked after them and ding the Flyers for not picking those guys, I'm also not going to overvalue their draft skills because of 3 forwards picked in last 10 years when 2 of those were picked in a year you could have thrown a dart at a board and pick players of roughly equal value.

Yes, I am discounting Steve Downie. He is the exact kind of player that I'd argue they should stay away from. I really wanted Paul Stastny as an example, a much more skilled forward with a higher ceiling.

I'll give them Couturier, with an asterisk that a) he was almost impossible not to pick in that spot, and b) they probably should have picked Hamilton instead. But it was a good pick.

Laughton may be a good pick, too early to say yet. I still think it would have been more prudent to draft Maata in that spot, but they may end up being correct there.

I consider all of Zherdev, Coburn, Kostitsyn, Jessiman, Nilsson, Bernier, Fehr, Stuart, Pouliot, Stewart, Boyle, Tambellini, Eaves, and Belle 1st round misses for that year. That's 14/30 picks that teams could've picked an all-star but picked the wrong guy. It's impressive compared to a normal draft year, but there was still only a little bit over a 50% hit percentage.

Not horror or muppets, but did anyone else think Outlander was underrated? It starred Jim Cavesle (whatever, Jesus) as an alien who lands in Viking period Norway.

damn still have yet to see the Piano Teacher but i know its supposed to be excellent

only ones ive peeped by him are Games (both versions), Caché, the White Ribbon

you see Amour? got nod for best picture. im curious about it


edit: Oldboy is great, yes. Kinda mad that Spike Lee is making it his next "joint"

Piano Teacher is my favorite of what I've seen of him. I also saw Caché...thought it was good but not his best. Have not seen his newer films yet, but I've been meaning to. Have not seen Amour yet. I'm a bit behind on my movie watching lately.

Re: Park - I don't even think Oldboy is his best movie (still great, though). Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is probably my favorite. He also did a really twisted version of a vampire movie called Thirst. It's more like what vampires might really be like, and less fantasy.

edit: also, speaking of foreign movies, if you have not seen The Lives of Others - i forget who it's by - I can't recommend it enough.

Heck yeah! Love me some Dark Crystal.

Almost as much as I love seeing Bowie as the Goblin King in Labyrinth.

Saw that for the first time when my wife and I were first dating. One of her favorites.

Of course, it is indirectly responsible for me digging into Bowie's discography.

Actually, I just watched a bit of it over the weekend. I really like the whole flashback scene for O-Ren Ishii. That was cool.

The other thing that really stuck out is how ugly Uma Thurman's feet are. Gorgeous gal (especially loved her look in Baron Munchaussen) but some seriously fugly toes

There are movies which help you define how magic touches your life. This is one of them. It's a kid flick but man it's good.

Also, I was surprised at the new Conan the Barbarian. The original is probably a top 3 movie for me. But if you watch the new one on its own merit, it's not horrible. It's too clean looking for a guy like Conan, but it's a fairly well done movie.

As for other REH movies, Kull the Conqueror, starring Kevin Sorbo, is horrible.
However, Solomon Kane was pretty good.

Lastly, I found it funny that the original Conan resembles a Kull story, and that Kull resembles a Conan story.

Let me say it another way. I trust the ISS scouting service more than the Flyers scouts, and maybe guys like McKenzie. Then based on those rankings, coupled with combine measurements etc, and other publicly available information, a reasonably knowledgeable poster on this site staying close to the "board" could do no worse.

The problem is the Flyers fall in love with certain profiles of player and choose those players over other more talented players, and it has not proven to be a successful strategy, especially after the first round.

If I had used the last 10 years as a benchmark instead of going back to 2000, the Flyers would not have one significant contribution coming from a player picked after the 1st round. That's pretty bad.

After I saw Bad Taste I had to track it down. My friend snagged a copy of it at a Con.

I really think you are stretching to make your point. At least 4 of those were good picks.

And if you want to make that argument, I'd argue that there were many other players picked in round 2 and 3 that were as good or better than Carter or Richards too.

I'll just say that I disagree with you, and move on.

I saw it a couple of years ago and don't remember what you're talking about. I remember the suicide towards the end, and the movie ending with a shot of their house...I guess I must've missed it.

the biggest reason I watchedc the muppets as a kid were these too.

With the addition of Nicushkin and Seguin, the Stars are now a team i'd like to watch. They were pretty much the opposite before that.

totally agree. dont know if it will translate into success in the win column just yet, but they are succeeding in bringing some flash and excitement to the ice. good for them. i like to see fanbases have something to be excited about
