No I REALLY hated seeing this year during the playoffs. Is after a icing a winger would step into the faceoff dot and jumo the gun on purpose to get kicked out in order to give the center man a rest. I swear that Boston did this three or four times a game and it seemd to be thornton everytime. I would like to see a rule made
against it becuase it looks stupid and prolongs the game.
Another rule I would like to see is if a team takes a penalty on purpose within the the last minute of overtime, the player should be disallowed in the s/o and the other team should be rewarded a penalty shot in overtime |

It's not a difference maker, otherwise, he'd be making more than $600K.
Hall simply gives the Flyers a proven option and solid 4th liner, who can help on the PK and win draws. Maybe all it means is that Laviolette doesn't have to use Giroux for every defensive zone draw, which could lead to him having to take extra shifts, and he doesn't waste energy trying to clear the zone and get off the ice. - Jsaquella
Hall isn't going to be out there in the last minute of the game, used much while they're defending a 1-goal lead, or on the ice when the team really needs to secure possession to lead to a goal.
He's also not well-rounded/effective enough to be trusted to start a shift with another line just to win a draw, a la Yanic Perreault/Patrice Bergeron.
If Hall was already under contract, I wouldn't have a problem at all with what he brings to the table. Burning another contract slot for him, when they already have a couple of other guys who are able to take FO's strictly against other grinders, is the part that gets me. |

With hard work, anyone can make themselves a good faceoff man. Look at Giroux and Crosby. Both of them worked hard to improve their work at the dot.
That said, I like having Hall around. He gives options to the coach and lessens the load on Giroux to be the key faceoff guy - Jsaquella
I think they (Coots and Schenn) need to take a whole week or two at some point and just practice faceoffs. Just dedicate a whole chunk of time like that to faceoffs. It's extreme but it would work. |

So Holmstrom was that guy to step in and do that? Or Kris Newbury was? No Hall won't be out there during the last minute of the game with a one goal lead, but maybe he is there in the D zone moreso than usual which gives G a rest to play that last minute in the 3rd, which he wouldn't have had otherwise. |

It takes time to get familiar with linesmen, too. Faceoffs are 50% skill, 50% knowing when/how to cheat.

I have more issues with a contract slot being taken by manning and wellwood

I'd be in my driveway practicing 8 hours every day during the summer if that would get me more ice time. |

Hall was effective on the last line last year, and he is crazy cheap. I don't know why it's up for dispute suddenly this year. He'll be fine. Statistically I think he was actually our best PKer. He makes our 4th line much less of a defensive liability. He adds a little bit of American blood to the line up . I think with Knuble gone he's our only American on roster. |

He's not going to be out there in the last minute of a game, but there's 59 minutes before that where he can lessen the load placed on Giroux's shoulders last season.
Hall was also used, quite a bit, by Laviolette on the PK after arriving in Philly. He's also been used pretty extensively as a PK guy by every team he's been on over the past 3 years, averaging over 2:40 per game on the PK |

Rosehill is horrible I'd like to see McGinn on the 4th line. I would however like to see Gagne-Couturier-Read out there against Stamkos. That'd be most effective defensively. |

If the Flyers sign Gagne, Rosehill is forward 14 if he's ahead of McGinn. |

Holmstrom is less than a year removed from serious knee surgery. I'm not putting too much faith in his abilities just yet. I think the signing of Hall kind of confirms that from an organizational standpoint as well. |

Okay so you picked the most dangerous sniper in the game to prove your point? I'd rather have Talbot-Hall-Rinaldo (my assumed 4th line) against Stamkos at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd with a one goal lead then continuously putting Giroux out there wearing him down by the end of the game. |

My concern is those shifts where Giroux loses the face off or they fail to control the puck, so he can get off the ice. Then he's stuck out there with the 4th liners, burning energy and playing a hard shift.
Being able to send Hall out there for even half of the draws that Laviolette had Giroux taking next year will reduce the load on him greatly. |

McGinn starts the season in AHL my guess and is and first injury he is placed in the staring lineup and Rosehill cont to sit. Rosehill IMO is the new shelley, is a warm body in practice and only plays if their is a game time decision or Hall sits if their is a heavyweight who needs a ass kickin |

they've needed a guy to take hard mins away from G for a few yrs. someone who can win faceoffs, work PK and add a phyical edge in a chippy game. holmstrom has not shown the ability to do these at the nhl level. ez enuf to move out a $600k contract, so i dont see any big deal here. |

Yeah, there's definitely more utility there in terms of what he can do to offset the loss of Fedotenko on the PK than having an impact on the game via faceoffs. Still not worth a contract slot, though, IMO. |

As others have said, I prefer Hall getting the slot over Wellwood and Manning.
I like Wellwood, but who knows if he'll come back and manage to be as fast as he was before the injury, because that is the key to his chances to stick. I don't see teams beating down his door had he not been sent a QO.
Also, if Holmstrom or whomever can get it done and there's a crunch, waive Hall. He'd be claimed, like he was twice last season. Guy like that, with such a small hit, is valuable |
