With the recent Mike Smith and Bobrovsky contracts, I'd say Homer could've actually inflated the goalie market. - JAKEw1234
Unfortunately, that's how sports works. These agents have something to compare to and use that as a basis for their own client. So, yes, definitely, Holmgren did inflate it.
I just can't stand reading that Bryzgalov was 100% Snider's fault. Holmgren overestimated the market and outbid himself at the minimum. As a GM, your job is to get the best possible deal for your team, not the player.

I wish we could trade Mez for an extra buyout in case streit is a flop. Sigh - Just5
Wouldn't that be funny if they could. Flyers hoarding buyouts. I imagine that type of thing would be considered circumventing the cap. |

IMO I think the Defensive prospects are what they are, future verisons of Coburn-Meszaros-Grossmann. They will be 3-6 guys. Not that bad, every team needs these types of players. It sucks they used an 11th overall pick on one, but hey, whatever. What it does mean however is that in a few years we will be able to lower the cost of the defense. Istead of paying 4-6 d-man between 3.5-4 million, we will be able to pay them between 1-2 million for the same product. Much like how the Rangers were able to do for so long. That should allow us to trade for or sign the number 1 guy that we need. I still have no faith the Flyers can pick a franchise defenseman in the draft. - youarewrong
It's impossible to say what an 18 or 19 year old dman will be. Even if you're right they can always trade depth for talent. |

Both OEL and Tyler Myers (!) got more.
Subban, Hedman and John Carlson got less. |

I wouldn't put much stock in the Sabers negotiation skills. I think they attended The Paul Holmgren School of Negotiation. |

He's gone now, so it really doesn't matter who is at fault. They admitted their mistake and moved on. - PLindbergh31
To the extent that it's over now and he's been bought out, I have moved on. I just don't like seeing Holmgren getting a total blame amnesty from that disaster while all the blame gets put on Snider.
I would say the blame share was 80/20 in favor of Holmgren. |

If he's traded in his final season after July 1st, I believe the team trading for him would only need to pay him $2 million for his $5.25m cap hit. |

I don't think so. I think Snider put him in a position where he had to do something. He either had to trade his best assets for a goalie or overpay for one |

If Weber had a career ending injury, what are the chances of him retiring, and walking away from all that money? And Giroux waslking away from that money? Not going to happen. Cap recapture is off the books in the case of a player getting a career ending injury. That risk no longer exists in that case. So therefore it is the same exact sitation as Giroux getting a career ending injury. And it would be the same, both player stuck on long term LTIR. So if we're going to worry about concussions and career ending injuries, they shouldn't have signed Giroux to an 8 year extension. - MJL
I might be mistaken, but I don't think I am. I believe that if a player retires due to injury and is proven medically unfit to play, insurance will pay the rest of the players salary. A lot like Work-mans comp and disability. The only reason Pronger has to not retire is for the Flyer's Cap, and they most likely offered him a "position" inside the office if he didn't retire. If Giroux's leg got cut off after next season due to on-ice injury, then he would get his entire contract if he retired. |

He could've gotten Bryz at a much better term and hit if he had a better pulse on the goalie market and his fellow GM's. |

Given the size of the buyout, I think if Homer had as much culpability in Bryz's acquisition as you think, Homer would have been fired. |

I always hated how teams thought it was an unwritten rule not to OS a player. It's part of the game and designed for players to get fair market value. If a player is worth more than 4 1st round picks then why hasn't the original team signed him yet? |

I think the fact that Holmgren is still employed indicates Snider was the driving force. Anyway, it really doesn't matter who is at fault because Bryzgalov is gone and no longer a concern. |

Holmgren is still employed b/c Snider is a fiercely loyal guy. Only reason Clarke is no longer GM is because Clarke took himself out. |

He was put in a position where he could not miss. He had no leverage. If he came back with Bob the next season and Bob struggled, Homer would have been fired. Snider would have said "I told you to get a top goalie and you didn't even though I was willing to pay top dollar." |

At this point I would rather keep the Depth we have in defense and start to let the guys that are costing us 3-5 million to play 2nd and 3rd pair go. Let these guys develop, and if a number 1 comes available snatch him up. |
