Name one other forward in the league that's put on the point only because of his passing.
- JAKEw1234

Alfie was known for this.

Brad Richards?

To free up a contract slot somebody else has to be willing to take the contract on.
- Jsaquella

I guess that makes the trading of Mez all the more important.

Marty St. Louis is a HOF candidate when he retires.

I like Matt Read's game a lot, but he ain't that yet.

- johndewar

I was just saying they could create that dynamic together. Read is a faster smaller player, he has good ice vision, sound defensively, can bury the puck, as well as make passes.

Is he a perfect clone of St Louis... No, but I see similiaries between the players.

Mike Richards has an alright shot, but he was more known for his passing and playmaking. He was a mainstay on the point for the Flyers.

St Louis is an unbelievable playmaker/passer. Read isn't even close to his level offensively.

Its like comparing Gus to Timonen because they're the same size.

Yup.

I also remember Mark Recchi playing the point during his 2nd stint in Philly.

Agreed. St. Louis is one of the best playmakers in the game. Read is a very good player.

I guess I've been proven wrong
But beyond his puck control and passing, he is invaluable to our PP for his scoring ability.

In fact, guys like Ovechkin and Stamkos don't really play the point. They may play the second defenseman but they just hangout around the dot and let rip when given the chance.

If they are on the ice together against the pens and the Flyers ice the puck. I will concede a goal to the Pens just so I don't have to watch the result.

Our 1st PP unit scored 24 goals last season. Voracek scored 8 of those. Without that 1 player I would argue that our PP would've scored up to 33% less goals then it did with that 1 player in it.

The Flyers didn't have Vinny last year. I only make this change because I believe Vinny's shot will help the PP keep its high success rate.

But why change anything if as a unit our 1st PP could definitely have the highest success rate of any other single unit in the entire league. Only other single unit I could think of that's more successful would be Ovechkins PP in Washington.
