Now I loved Keith Jones when he played in Philly, but Lindros made him look like an All-Star...In the 98-99 season Jonesy had career numbers in PTS and Assissts and his tied for his second highest goals total...18-31-49 in 66 games...
I remember watching the games and can't count how many times the announcers would say that Lindros could play with two trash cans on the wings and still outscore most of the league... - JW98FlyerFan
After Renberg was traded away ( ), some of the people they trotted out on Eric's wing was downright silly.
Mike Maneluk was one of them. |

You must never have watched Lindros play in his prime. The only thing OV does better than Lindros is skate faster. In every other skill area Lindros is equal (and in most cases better) than OV. And in the non-skill aspects of the game Lindros is the clear winner. He hit more, and hit harder than OV ever will, and absolutely nobody wanted to fight him. Nobody is worried about fighting OV.
OV is a great player - not saying he isn't. But he's not as good as Lindros was, nor as complete a player.
Lindros in his prime >>>> OV in his prime. - BringBack25
I saw Lindros's entire Flyers career.
Lindros would not be as physically dominating in today's NHL for the simple fact that there are plenty of guys his size and even bigger now. And today's players are better skaters on the whole than back then. 6-4 and 240 is not a big deal in the modern NHL. You have guys like Chara that are 6-9 and 260 and can skate well enough to shut down most elite players.
As for Lindros vs Ovechkin skillwise. I break it down like this. Slapshot: wash. Wrister: slight edge to OV. Passing: slight edge to Lindros as he was more a playmaker than scorer vs OV being more a scorer than playmaker. Skating: OV by a good margin. Lindros wasn't known as a 2-way guy but he was probably better at defense than OV. |

I'm beginning to think the Flyers might need to give up a pick to get rid of Meszaros. Carolina had to give up Alt to get rid of Boucher last year and his cap hit is a fraction of Meszaros's. I hope I'm wrong. - phillydentist
Then do it already!! |

It's not like if Ovechkin was knocked out of hockey next season he's making it into the HHoF automatically. Comparing the two of them is fairly meaningless. Like arguing over whether listed sizes are accurate. - mayorofangrytown

Lindros before the two knee injuries in his first and second NHL seasons was an equal or better skater to Ovechkin, IMO. I still like Lindros would be physically dominating because he wasn't just big, he was incredibly strong as well. |

I believe Lindros' size would be MORE of an advantage in today's NHL, he was dragging guys around the ice all night long back then. Also, there really isn't as many guys his size as you think...certainly not taking regular shifts. Chara is a freak...but nowhere near mobile enough to shut Lindros down. Give him a hard time...yes. But not shut down.
And Lindros' wrister was miles better than Ovi's. But Lindros' biggest advantage was simply that he actually made his teammates better...something Ovi has yet to really do.

If Crobsy thought Hatcher was tough, I wish I could have seen Lindros pop the wiener's head like a Pimple.
**edit. A collision that would result in both having a concussion. |

Lindros had a +/- Rating of 215 over 760 games, OV is +82 over 601 games...really don't think you can say Eric isn't a good 2 way player, because unless OV finds +140 over his next couple of years he is not getting there...OV doesn't play D...not even a little...

I don't know what Lindros's skating would've been without the knee injuries. I can only go by what I saw and remember of him as he was.
As for his strength, I don't know, Bill. It's easy to look strong when you are knocking around guys that are 20 lbs lighter than you on most nights. When he was matched up against guys his own size like Keith Primeau and Ed Jovanovski, he was pretty much neutralized. That's what led Clarke to get Primeau IMO. And even 6 ft 215lb Scott Stevens was able to neutralize Lindros physically in his prime. Am I wrong in saying that? |

I don't disagree. Lindros wasn't known for his D but he wasn't a liability like OV. |

I would defer to Pronger's quote on play against the "mutants" Lindros and Leclair if they could really "contain" them... |

Lindros would get a concussion. Crosby would probably be decapitated. |

I'm really curious about which sport John Smallwood covers. He doesn't seem to know anything about any of the teams except the Union. |

Eric Lindros was giving a guy like Chara a run for his money when Chara was playing for the Islanders. I remember a time where Joe Thornton had some sort of bad attitude and went into a fighting spree. At the time Lindros was a Ranger and a shell of his former self and tuned Joe Thornton. That was the end of big bad Joe Thornton. There isn't a guy in the league today who is as big as Lindros was and had the skillsets today, while also willing to to pumble a guy. Lucifer might be the closest thing and even then I would say it's close. |

I think they are. Goaltending will be at least equal to last year. Probably better when you factor in how much better both current guys are at handling the puck compared to Bryz. |

Agree, Shanny's +/- was 151 over almost 2x the amount of games as E had, even if Shanny was "ok" at D he should have had a better rating with those Detroit teams over time... |

It always seems like the Flyers develop several enemies because they don't toe the company line. |
