Isn't every team already over the floor or is the following Wiki incorrect?
Since the NHL salary cap was reintroduced following the ratification of the current CBA, it has risen every year since being instituted. The salary floor is fixed at US$16 million below the cap, with the exception of the 2013–2014 season, where the cap floor is $44 million. - jstross[16][3]
There are still a few cap floor teams that really do need dmen. Calgary, Colorado, Florida, and the NY Islanders all have oodles of cap space and could use a Dman. |

You and me both. Iliked most of what they did this year but I'm kinda sick of these journeymen at the bottom of the roster and now we have three of them bopping around. One would have been plenty for me. - mayorofangrytown
Yes, cause we all know journeymen like Lappy & Betts did nothing for us. |

Bill,
If Nichushkin was still on the board at 11, what are the chances Flyers would have drafted him over Morin ?
Thanks |

Malkin and Crosby - mayorofangrytown
Nope. In fact, the only Penguin to ever appear on an NHL cover is Lemieux in 2002.
Wasn't that the year Sakic was on it and for some reason they changed it to someone else? - JAKEw1234
Like I mentioned to AllIn, that's not what I was going for with the question (and you have it backwards. It was Heatley, and when he got into the car wreck, they changed it to Sakic.) One cover, multiple players on it, as opposed to multiple covers in one year. |

two things:
1) Teams probably won't take him until he's cleared to play, just to be safe
2) There are still a few free agent options. Many teams will probably try there first, but once the good ones are gone, and the teams that missed out get a bit more desperate, they'll be more willing to take a chance with Mezaros.
Those are 2 things that will solve themselves with alittle bit of patience. I expect Mez to be traded in due time. - JAKEw1234
There aren't that many open roster spots for dmen around the league... if there was pent up demand, why are legit top-4 guys like Hainsey, Whitney and Gilbert still out there? I doubt it's because they've gotten so many offers that they're just mulling it over. |

That's what I'm thinking -- I think finding a team to swallow that salary is going to be TOUGH.
There's only a few teams who can honestly even consider it, with Meszaros' injury history.
Again, I want to believe that it can be done. But I agree with where you are on that -- it's not as simple as it sounds. - AllInForFlyers
The thing about Meszaros as compaired to the other guys teams want to dump is Meszaros is on a 1 year deal. Just 1 year left and if it doesnt work bye. If it does, you can sign him for cheaper. Probally the best risk-reward out there as well. Because he as been injured they will get him for cheap, and there is a decent chance he can still play top 4 minutes and excell. Low risk High reward. Short term.... and no clauses to prevent movement. If the Flyers want to move Meszaros, they can and will. |

Let's just say that there are no shortage of teams trying to peddle off their own Meszaros's and a scant few teams for where these kinds of players could possibly end up. To say it's a buyer's market would be an understatement... Mez might as well have a NTC with the limited options that Homer is probably looking at. - Tomahawk
What other teams are trying to trade a young defensemen with 1-year left on his contract who has been a good player in the past, but is coming off a bad injury? |

Outside of Calgary, the rest of those are budget teams that would rather take on a Tim Thomas cap hit for free than actually take on a guy who's salary almost 40% higher than his cap hit. |

They are likely waiting for "a shoe to drop" Something that will increase the value of thier contracts. |

I think you're making it a bigger deal then it is. It's 1.5M over his cap hit. That's not a big deal in today's NHL. If anything is going to affect the ability to move Meszaros, it's going to be the injury history. Not the contract or the salary. It's for one Season. |

A lot of the dmen in the same category (overpaid, decline/injury-risk) have already been CBO'd -- Colaiacovo, Gilbert, Kuba -- their teams couldn't find any takers for them.

Or, more likely, there are very few teams interested and they're all waiting for the UFA's demands to keep dropping as the summer rolls along. |

Said it earlier Mez is a really good defenseman and if Flyers werent in salary cap trouble would love to have him back. Im guessing that teams want to see him pass a physical before trade. 4 mil for a top 4 dman isnt that bad and it's a one year deal if it doesn't work out. |

They all only had 1-year left: Kuba @ $4M ($4.2M salary), Colo @ $2.5M ($2.85M salary), Gilbert $4M ($3M salary). |

Maybe they will buy Meszaros out and hope the cap going up next year covers the the $1.83 million cost.
2013-14: $333,333

Yeesh, good point. Especially with Gilbert.
Maybe just use a regular buyout on Meszaros? There's another window coming up soon, right?
Or worse options:
1. Waive and demote Meszaros -- very little cap relief and alienate player
2. Trade Grossmann or Coburn -- open to Grossmann, but not Coburn
3. Meszaros (or someone else) as 7th d-man |
