I like Portland Pioneers, but looks like there may already be a team (minor league?) with that name. Fits well with the hisotry and Pioneer Square being right in the middle of the city.

If you could play off being known as Stumptown or Rose City, you could come up with better names than using Portland as the starting name.

Comparing giving away a second rounder so a team will take on a contract to a GM trying to put his team over the top at the TDL isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison.

But yes, I feel that Shero misused assets in his deadline splurge. Just like the Flyers using NHL contract slots on guys that can only get into a NHL game by buying a ticket is a mis-use of assets

- Jsaquella

My point really is that most good teams make moves to try and make the team better. And that sometimes that requires including some assets to do so.

Which players are you referring to specifically in describing as having to buy a ticket to get into an NHL game?

By the way, the Flyers included a 6th round pick to LA with Legein. Not a 2nd rounder.

Mike Testwuide, Tyler Brown, Blake Kessel, Tyler Hostetter, Cullen Eddy.

I'm fine with making moves such as signing undrafted UFAs. But the Flyers were so active, it had them stuck at a high contract count and led to picks being wasted to entice other teams to take on bad deals for non NHL level players

They were all young players that they tried to develop. Every team has prospects that never make it to the NHL.

The draft pick included with Legein was a 6th round pick. Not a 2nd.

Looking over the Flyers trade history. I don't see a bunch of deals where they had to include draft picks to get other teams to take non NHL level players.

Testuwide was traded for Mitch Wahl. Who they then declined to qualify, and cleared up a contract slot.

2 year ago I got tickets lower bowl by zamboni entrance. I kept looking over railing during pre skate and she came out ( still had her jacket on) I asked her if shed come up a take a pictUre. She was more than happy to She said print it out and bring it back next time and she'll sign it. She chanted for a couple minutes. Very nice down to earth woman. Also I got a puck :10 into the game. Had to dive in the aisle for it but well worth it

no way in hell you get Timbers. The Timbers Army would rip Bettman limb from limb. And no way the club would give up that brand.

No, what is unreasonable is criticizing them for not being patient. And for trading away draft picks to win now. And then in turn criticizing them for not leaving contract slots open so they can make moves during the Season. And give examples of teams that traded top draft picks and prospects away, for playoff rentals, as reasons for leaving contract slots open.

Legitimate criticisms are one thing. Criticizing them on pretty much every thing. Not legitimate. And certainly not reasonable

- MJL

There's no contradiction in my position... it's wise to keep a few contract slots open for eventualities, whether it's to bring in TDL help, or if it's to pick up useful players on waivers/trade, or to go after undrafted FA's. Whatever shape a team's in, it's always smart to have a little cap space and some contract slots handy to seize on opportunities.

BTW, all of this was only in response to your dubious assertion that if a team isn't using up all its cap space and contract slots, it's tantamount to not trying hard enough.

i really do hope seattle gets a team. maybe even portland. would love a real northwestern rivalry from san jose up to vancouver. wonder what the name would actually be...doubt they'd go old school seattle metropolitans.

Willcox, Parks, Placek, Luukko and Vasiliev are not under NHL contracts with the Flyers that count against the 50 contract limit.

Kessel was under a NHL deal that counted as of last season.

Seattle Seals is the obvious one. A Seattle-Portland NHL rivalry would be awesome, and both cities could and should have an NHL team imo.

There's a huge contradiction. The example's you gave of what the Pens and Chicago did, were clear. The same type of moves you've criticized the Flyers for in the past. And now you're criticizing them for not leaving contract slots open so they can make the very moves you've criticized them for making in the past.

My assertion is not dubious. When you're a team that is not a good team, and you leave contract slots unused. Season after Season. You're not doing everything you can. Same for unused Cap space. It's just a waste.

Whatever angle you want to come from. I can point out how the Flyers have done exactly what you say they should do. Signed undrafted Free agents. Check. Claimed players off of waivers. Check. Traded for players at the deadline. Check.
They've been able to do it all.

Any perceived contradiction can be directly attributed to you trying to put words in my mouth... I never advocated dealing youth for vets... I only mentioned those deals as a counterpoint to your statement that teams with championship aspirations are better off being at 50-contracts/against the Cap, when there is ample evidence showing that the contrary is actually the case.
