Poor MJL trying desperately to keep this post on hockey.
Not to re-hash but I missed most of the reactions to Kovalchuk's leaving...
What is his cap hit for them? Something small right? And do you think the NHL is going to make a poop storm out of it?
I have a Devils fan who is a close friend. I have yet to grief him over it. want to get my facts straight first.

quarter million over 10 yrs. I heard someone on 590 say the NHL might not extract the draft pick they'll lose next season but that would surprise me. |

I wouldn't kick a dog when he is down.. Geeze. The Devils are going to be bad for a long time because of this. They lost a lot to aquire him, then lost Parise and Clarkson because of his salary and who knows what they would have done in FA, and they lose thier 2014 pick, which is looking to be a good pick now. AND he doesn't announce it until after UFA is pretty much over. And they waist a pick on Broduer's replacement when they arent going to be good while Schneider is under contract. Bet they wish they had that pick back for Nichushkin. |

It's too expensive to order the UFC to watch live. We used to have parties and for a whole group of people it's ok. But just to flip on? Naw... |

That's stupid, because they had a couple of years to choose which draft pick they lost. Unless there is a pity clause in the CBA we don't know about. |

wtf - Don'tForgetTocchet
It was Kypreos. He said they used pick 29 last year because they've known all along that they would be able to keep the 1st round pick that they were penalized.
It would shock me if that happened but only a little. |

First of all, Hope you feel better. The Devils will have a miniscule Cap hit of about 250K a year. I think this opens up a can of worms. If the NHL doesn't do anything, it opens up a precedent that players can just walk away from their contract, and bolt for the KHL. With no repercussions. |

Next your going to tell us you count your steps too.
Although I should do both.... but my time is too important for me to type into my cell phone that I just ate half a banana and look up the caliore count for it. I mean people do realize that humans have kept relatively healthy for the first 100k years of existance or whatever it is without calorie counting... - youarewrong
I find that sort of stuff helps me stay in good shape as well as eat better for hockey. when you play against kids way younger than you, being in good shape and good nutrition helps. but that's me |

Usually if its a really good fight or a good card I will order it, If its a moderate card I'll go to the bar. But really, after food and drink the bar bill is usually as high as the fight would cost.
5- SoCo with lime
3- tall dogfish head 90 minute
25 boneless wings... spicy garlic, Mango Habenaro, and Asian Zing...
ok, calorie count for me. |

Your mood reflects the weather this summer. Hot, sticky and stormy.
What's it going to take to ease your mood? Internet hugs? Take a look at your wife... you've already out kicked your coverage for life. What's to be gloomy about?
C'mon Joe, give us a little sunshine. - mayorofangrytown
I just see more of the same with this team... And the weather probably is dampening my mood ... Thanks |

It really bothers me that he can just walk away. What's to stop someone like say the Flyers from talking Bryzgalof into going to the KHL and reserving our buyout for another player? That's basically what happened. |

This is something they should include in contracts. If a player does not honor his entire contract with the exception of injury, then they should be required to pay back a percentage of what they were already given....
The only other way I think you can prevent things like this is by having anyone that walks away from a contract for another league get a lifetime ban. There is no coming back. |

Why would Bryz do that. He would leave MILLIONS on the table. |

There's a bit of a loophole there, but the player is technically being 'punished' by leaving ungodly amounts of $ on the table, the Devils are 'punished' from losing the player (and the assets associated with his trade + contract)... outside of that, there's really not much the NHL can do except effectively bar him from unretiring while his contract is still in effect... that in effect would be the league 'punishing' the fans for keeping an all-world talent at arms length should he wish to return.
Maybe the IIHF could sanction Kovalchuk, but the NHL can't really touch him now. |

Today on the airwaves they were saying the IIHF should step in. They do it when a player is suspended. Say you get a year long ban for substance abuse from the NHL. You can't pack your stuff and go to another country and start playing. They uphold that suspension. |
