I agree to a point. But there has to be some common sense applied. Chris Pronger having to stop playing because he takes a stick in the eye while he was still a productive player, is apples and oranges when compared to some 39 year old player who retires because of chronic knee trouble that has been developing over years and years.

There should be a mechanism in place to give the teams some relief from the apples. Right now it is a farce. It cant be that difficult to determine which is which.

- MBFlyerfan

There is a mechanism is place. LTIR and the 10% off season cap exemption.

I was more joking. I don't think Homer is going to be fired unless this season is a train wreck.

Homer just wants someone else who can match him in intense staring contests. I have a feeling that'll be happening a lot between the two of them now.

This part's easy enough to fix, if the league actually wanted to. For a player to retire under these circumstances without cap penalties to their team, require league-employed doctors, unaffiliated with any team, to evaluate their condition. If those impartial doctors say that the player will never be able to play again, permit the retirement and offer full cap relief for that player rather than continuing this charade. If they say there is a chance of recovery, the team must continue to carry the player or accept the retirement cap penalty.

This doesn't address other aspects of the problem, but if you want to stop farcical retirements from gaming the system, simply give the league full control over the determination of whether the player can recover or not.

- dilbert719

It's really not about players gaming the system as far as LTIR is concerned. It's about simple Cap economics. It's still money paid to a player, whether he is playing or not. And that has to count against the players share as far as HRR is concerned.

Who was the assistant GM before? Or did we not have one? I am wondering if anyone got replaced.
- feelingkettle

Don Luce was formerly the director of Hockey Operations, and Chris Pryor was basically the Asst GM.

Interesting move. A lot of media see Hexy as a future GM, and this is kind of a lateral move for him.

Or, the Flyers needed yet another old goaltender on the payroll.

Better chance to be promoted is the way Hextall is looking at it I'm sure. Lombardi is going nowhere in L.A.

Not to mention, Hextall is pretty much revered in Philadelphia. I'm sure he might get a little boost in his paycheck as well. No brainer here for Ron imo.

Agreed. As I mentioned before, that would require amending the CBA to include the "Medically Retired" category, which would be money paid to retired players that does not count against the cap, but counts as part of the players' share of hockey-related revenue. Not sure what the horse trade would be there, but it would, if they chose to incorporate this, open up contract slots for more players, which should benefit the NHLPA on some level, and on some level, there's a cost associated with the "I'm trying to get back into game shape, honest I am, wink wink" nonsense these players have to go through, which would no longer be a factor, so there are a couple small benefits that come into play here.

I don't expect this to happen, by any means, but it's not utterly illogical; it just requires a few reasonably modest changes in mindset, if the will to do it existed.

Yeah, but Hanrahan is the cap guy and Paddock was actually acting as an assistant coach, more than a traditional assistant GM.

Pryor was the guy running the scouting for juniors.

Maybe not a trainwreck. But close to it. Not a lot went right last year. Outside of Voracek, and L. Schenn.

Of course they're not going to be 100% accurate, and if they get it wrong, then the player's stuck in the current status quo. Maybe they let Pronger retire, maybe they don't. However, Pronger's not the only player this is going to apply to, and if the injury is a more obvious one (to choose a blatant, if grotesque example, presume a player on a 35+ contract gets in a car wreck and loses a leg), there's no reason to pretend he's going to strap on a blade like Oscar Pistorius and not miss a beat.
- dilbert719

Your idea wont and let me give you an example instead of explaining.

Dallas offers Jagr a 5 year deal at age 41 knowing he only has 2 years left. They front load the contract to pay him the bulk in the first 2 season, lowering his cap hit significantly. By age 43, any doctor would find him unable to play, groin knees, etc... and the Stars effectively give him like an 8 million worth of cap hit for say 5 million, or whatever.

I'm sure the money is probably better, and the director of Hockey Ops title could be more than just an empty entry to slap on a resume.
