I don't think last season was a train wreck. The season that will not be named was a train wreck. - PhillySportsGuy
I do think if they miss the playoffs this season, Hextall might get another new title. |

Agreed. As I mentioned before, that would require amending the CBA to include the "Medically Retired" category, which would be money paid to retired players that does not count against the cap, but counts as part of the players' share of hockey-related revenue. Not sure what the horse trade would be there, but it would, if they chose to incorporate this, open up contract slots for more players, which should benefit the NHLPA on some level, and on some level, there's a cost associated with the "I'm trying to get back into game shape, honest I am, wink wink" nonsense these players have to go through, which would no longer be a factor, so there are a couple small benefits that come into play here.
I don't expect this to happen, by any means, but it's not utterly illogical; it just requires a few reasonably modest changes in mindset, if the will to do it existed. - dilbert719
Not illogical, but are you really that eager to relive "disclaimer of interest" and #NHLPodium? |

Maybe not a trainwreck. But close to it. Not a lot went right last year. Outside of Voracek, and L. Schenn. - PLindbergh31
It's a young team, injuries and Gervais happened. |

There is no such thing as money paid to a player, that doesn't count against the Cap. It defeats the entire purpose of having a salary Cap. It's money outside the system. Opening up contract slots just adds more money to the players. The Cap is in place to hold player salaries down. Everything you are proposing goes against the very principles of what a Salary Cap is about.

I'm sure the money is probably better, and the director of Hockey Ops title could be more than just an empty entry to slap on a resume. - Jsaquella
And he's the clear successor to Holmgren obviously. Which may be sooner, than later. |

Possibly. If the offseason moves end up being terrible, I could see it happening. I think it's very likely that this team makes the playoffs. |

Yeah, but Hanrahan is the cap guy and Paddock was actually acting as an assistant coach, more than a traditional assistant GM.
Pryor was the guy running the scouting for juniors. - Jsaquella

Yeah, I actually didn't notice that he got the Hockey Ops title too... that one's more significant than just plain Asst GM. Wonder if he'll have anything close to the authority that Roy is getting in COL... |

Your idea wont and let me give you an example instead of explaining.
Dallas offers Jagr a 5 year deal at age 41 knowing he only has 2 years left. They front load the contract to pay him the bulk in the first 2 season, lowering his cap hit significantly. By age 43, any doctor would find him unable to play, groin knees, etc... and the Stars effectively give him like an 8 million worth of cap hit for say 5 million, or whatever. - youarewrong
Excellent example. Even though there are a lot of new rules put in place, and some existing ones such as the over 35 rule, to stop most of that. But you're premise is correct. It would've been a better example with a younger player.

Speaking of money paid to the players outside the cap (which actually does exist for the moment), Has anyone heard how they are dealing with the "Make whole" money? That whole thing just hung there with no apparent resolution.
Also, I wonder if they have ever completed the CBA. It was a running joke for months and again... no apparent resolution announced. |

Whn I first heard it, I figured, well, they can't snatch him for a lateral job, it has to be a promotion, and figured the DHO title was just an empty way around the league's by laws.
But at the very least, Hextall is said to be highly regarded around the NHL, from his work both with the Kings and in the past for the Flyers. I just wonder what other pieces will fall. |

Have you read the redistribution system? Could you give it to me in a sentence or five. I'm curious but it's not destroying my life if you know what I mean. |

Actually I posted the wrong thing. The players cost redistribution system deals with revenue sharing. Exhibit 16A covers the make whole payments. As of right now, I can't give you much on that. I haven't really digested it yet myself. With the CBA, you can't just read most things once, and grasp it. At least I can't. It takes some time. I'll get back to you.
Just looking at it quickly, it's 100M to the players on October 21, 2014,15,16 |
