Buyout. - bradleyc4
They already used their amnesty buyouts with Bryz and Briere so a buyout of Mezaros would still have cap implications. My guess is that if they are unable to move Mez, they will reluctantly look to move Grossmann. |

So do you see a place for gagne in the lineup? - Just5
You could always make room if you had to. I'd rather give McGinn or Laughton a 4th line slot, then sign Gagne. |

I read somewhere they've tried to move grossman this summer too. Concussion history is a big issue. 3 years remaining on his deal I believe.
These aren't easy contracts to move. Might as well keep them all If we can as you know injuries will creep in |

Highly doubt either Grossmann or Meszaros are able to moved without taking back a similar contract.
You can buyout Meszaros with these cap hits:
2013-14: $333,333
2014-15: $1,833,333
And keep Pronger of LTIR, which gives you a lot more flexibility later in the season.
It's not ideal, but you can absorb that cap hit next year as part of the cap going up. |

As much as I like him I would low ball him.

They could do a regular buyout, which would be (I think) $333K and $1.833M for the next 2 years. But then you're just throwing away a potentially valuable asset (if he's healthy and other injuries pop up).
I'd rather them temporarily demote Schenn/Couturier/Rinaldo to get JUST UNDER the cap, LTIR Pronger, then recall the 3 of them and, yes, make him your 7th defenseman. |

He doesn't remain valuable sitting in the pressbox. |

I could live with that, I really don't want 1.8 million in dead cap space in 14-15 as that could easily be the difference in signing someone like Read or a dman to replace Timonen. |

No, but (if he's healthy) he'll be extremely valuable to be able to step in if there's an injury, as opposed to $1.8M of dead cap space next season. |

That would indeed be a novel way of clearing his cap hit this year, but I'm pretty sure that buyouts are only available outside of the ordinary window if a team has multiple players headed to arbitration.
Edit: I do agree 100% that moving his entire cap hit out now for a pick is a fantasy. More likely, the Flyers would have to be the ones to add the pick AND take back salary in return. |

Probelm is Giroux contract kicks in next season and signing Couturier, Schenn, Mason, Emery, Read, and possibly Meszaros plus replacing Timonen are next in line. We wont have that 1.8 million to spare next year. |

I'm of the opinion that people want to see Meszaros healthy before making a deal for him, but I believe he will eventually be dealt, despite what some people think. But if he is not, then the only value he brings is what he can do for your team, and if everyone beats him out of a job, then his value is to sit in the box and wait for an injury. |

Also, assuming one of your top-6 gets hurt, you can either bring up:
- MAB, assuming his head isn't mush
- Bruno Gervais
- Andrei Meszaros
Not a bad insurance policy to have Meszaros for this year as opposed to having your 7th be Gervais and carry almost a $2M cap hit for next year. |

Big-spending teams don't have the cap-space to absorb his cap-hit... 13/30 teams in the league would go over the cap today if they traded for him w/o the Flyers retaining salary and/or sending a problematic cap hit in return.
Small market teams won't like the discrepancy between his cap hit and real salary... $1.5M might not see like much to Ed Snider, but in a gate-driven league, that's like all the ticket revenue from 1-2 games for a team like FLA or NYI and could mean the difference between being in the black or red. |

As does Giroux's contract, Couturier's contract, Schenn's contract (maybe, more likely the same). Gustafsson and Read would need to be renewed. They need another top-6 defenseman to fill the hole left by Timonen/Meszaros. |

The Flyers coud retain 1.5M of his salary if they had to in a deal. That would still clear 2.5M of Cap space for the Flyers. |

And so does the cap hit for possible 7 players. 4 at the very least, Giroux, Couturier, Schenn, and Mason. Then you would have to replace Timonen, Emery, Meszaros, and Read.
I expect the cap to go up maybe 4 million. Add that to Timonen's 6 million and that is 10 million. Subtract the 5 million raise to Giroux, and now you only have 5 million left. I dont expect Schenn or Couts to get huge raises, but even so, an additional 1.8 million cap hit would be a death trap next season. |

Every year we read the same Cap worries. But every year it works out. And every year the Flyers are able to make considerable moves and spend money. It's the same this year. And it'll be the same next year. |

They use that to their advantage. Trade him and retain just enough to exactly meet the cap limit, then LTIR Pronger to get the full savings, |

If nobody would take Tom Gilbert and his contract for even a 7th round pick, no chance Meszaros (who's recently had 3 major injuries) gets dealt. |
