I wasn't saying they're similar players, I was saying they're similar characters in that they're hated on the ice and really good guys off the ice. Sorry if you misinterpreted that.

I think Holmgren has done a great job. There's certain issues I have with some aspects of his work, but those are minor. I think he's a very good GM, overall.

I do like that Hextall is back, because I like Hexy. Not sold on him as being a great GM, but he is said to be very well regarded around the NHL.

Certain people would say that about the Flyers medical staff...

I'd say Stan Bowman is also an excellent GM. He lost a ton of pieces from his 2010 team and restocked through the draft and won again. Peter Chiarelli is also a top GM.

Lou Lamoriello is a great GM, but his last title was in 2003

- Jsaquella

I like Chiarelli and he's won a Cup. There's no arguing with that but what the hell is he doing this off season? Wow! You'd think they missed the playoffs.

...and letting Marchand's name dangle in the rumour mill was pretty awful.

The big issue there was re-signing Grossmann before Carle, during the season. He could have had enough tagging space to keep Carle, but had to wait for the summer. By then Wideman got his asinine deal from Jay Feaster and Carle's price shot up
- Jsaquella

I agree. I'm not sure signing Carle was a good idea long term but it certainly would have help last years corp more than Grossman.

and I like Grossman but we aren't lacking for what he brings.

I disagree with the latter part. On a game-in-and-game-out basis, Grossmann has been the Flyers most consistent defensive D-man since his arrival from Dallas. He didn't have as many monster games as Schenn with eye-popping hits, shot block and TOI totals but he also had fewer bad nights.

Was a great GM. The 17 year contract for Kovalchuk, keeping the 29th pick, and the Clowe deal is just lurching from one bad mistake to the next.
- Feanor

Can't hang the Kovalchuk deal on Lou. Ownership did that deal. He was against it. Let's wait and see if with the retirement they end up losing that first round pick next season. There are people who think with ownership changing that they won't.

After Timmonen, Grossman is my favourite blue liner so don't take that wrong. I was merely opining that stay at home defensemen we have, we could have used Carle's puck skills more and I would think signing Grossman in the off season would have been an easier task than letting Carle hit the UFA period.

This has been my favourite off-season move to date:

1. Hexy back
2. Extend G
3. Bryz gone
4. Emery back
5. Vinny in

- PhiFaninEdm

6. Drafted 2 potential top 4 Dmen
7. Briere B/O

I love Grossmann.
I hope he comes back healthy.

I've been wondering about the D pairs.

From everything I've read about Streit, he is going to need a lot of offensive zone starts and not go up against the opponent's top line. Sounds like a third pair defenseman with a lot of PP time would be ideal.

Gus I think also need protected minutes, best to start him out in a third pair role.
Do they pair Gus with Streit? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have two of the better puck movers together.

Gus (IMO) is not ready for top four minutes yet.

Does Streit get top four minutes paired with Coburn or Grossmann? Those two often get the toughest match ups.
That means Streit with his defensive liabilities will have to play against the other team's top lines.

Not sure I love this.
