you guys might want to look up the definition of "winter sport"
- DoubleDown

I define a "winter sport" as "a sport that is primarily played during the winter season." Not sure Webster's ever defined that term.

Think about it. Say you are a company like Apple Computers. You are paying your engineers very well to produce for you, but every four years they get to do the same thing for free and you risk they could be unable to return to work. Engineers getting 100k a year would't be allowed to do what hockey players making millions get to do.

That's your comparison? really? an event that has been going on forever, pitting the best athletes in the world against each other, a form of national pride for everyone around the world, you're comparing it to working at apple?

If they don't go you will see more European and Russian players stay over there and play for clubs that will let them go. Playing for their country isn't necessarily bigger than winning the cup for most of them, but it's equal.

Wouldn't bother me at all if NHL players didn't play in the olympics. These guys are being paid a ton of money by there respective teams/fans. No need to risk injury outside of the NHL.

Then ask yourself, when does the NBA play its games?
- MBFlyerfan

Then ask yourself, is basketball in the summer or winter Olympics?

What is the difference if there's a tournament (canada/world cup) in Sept vs. one mid-season (olympics), Ek?

You still run the risk of injury, no matter when it's played.

Basketball is a summer sport, played in the summer olympics. NBA is played in the winter for tv revenue reasons only since baseball is too big in the summer. Stop being smartasses.

The NHL has gotten lucky so far, as there hasn't been any serious season ending injury to a star player in recent Olympics.

If that happens in 2014, I think the conversation really changes to being against going in 2018.

I'd like a return to a World Cup/Canada Cup sort of tournament. And as a stand alone event, it could be more featured and become more of a ratings draw for the US.

Plus the term was defined due to mother nature only allowing said "winter sports" to occur during the winter season.

You could probably artifically create most of the Winter Games now but tradition has them separated.

To each his own, but winter sports usually involves "winter", no?

Wow, can't believe I've lost 3 minutes in this stupid debate already.

The NHL in the Olympics only works well if it's in a country where hockey is big. I say scrap the Olympics and replace it with the World Cup of Hockey event and play that every 4 years or something. Make it mean more to the professionals so they will partake and play their hearts out. Not sure how you do that. Offer a cash reward, incentives, winning nation gets to host next tournament, etc. Soccer has it down with their World Cup. Would be nice to see professional hockey follow a similar route. Hockey a tough sell though. All of its top players already play in the same league, whereas soccer, the top players are spread all over the world in different leagues. If the KHL starts to take some of the top European players from the NHL, you may see an increase in the dedication for a world cup event.

Hey you're the one that referenced the NBA. They play NBA games inside last time I checked so the weather is irrelevant.

Try playing basketball on an outdoor court in the winter.

for the sake of selling the product you fool the NBA would have never had a chance coming into existence against MLB. You play soccer out doors on grass in shorts - its a summer sport. you play basketball on ashphalt in shorts - its a summer sport.
you play hockey on skates, on ice, in winter.

its a winter sport.

frikkin americans....

Well if I'm in Miami then that would be easy. Is the definition region specific now?

Only difference between a World Cup/Canada Cup is fewer people watching and a few more months to maybe heal if when you get hurt. If you get a serious injury you and your team will be just as screwed as in the Olympics.
