I think if they can't move Meszaros -- and I still they can and will by the end of the preseason, assuming he's healthy -- they would reluctantly trade Grossmann, assuming he's healthy (which I would be opposed to, but understand). The only way Coburn gets moved is if they get a satisfactory return. - bmeltzer
Unless the team believes Grossmann will never hold up for an entire season and have gas in the tank for the playoffs, I hate the idea of trading him.
He was arguably their best defenseman last season, until he was injured. I don't think he would be easily, or adequately, replaced.
If the change in the defense from last year ultimately boils down to Streit replacing Grossmann...well based on what else remains, I don't see how you're better - unless the return for Grossmann is outstanding. If it is a cap trade, I would be disgusted. I'd have a much easier time accepting Streit replacing Mez or Coburn.
If there are no other moves to be made, I think it would be smarter to start the season with B Schenn on the Phantoms, or whatever needs to be done to appease the cap lords, and then use the LTIR. Get Mez playing again, and build some value. Hope that Coburn has a bounce-back season. Sooner or later either the Flyers or some other team will have injuries to important d-men, and then you have an asset available when there is demand to match. |

Not taking an Olympic break would be a lot of fun to watch in the NHL. To see a lot of younger guys get a crack at the big team would be fun for everyone. - Flyersgod
well that sounds like a terrible and ridiculous idea. |

I agree. I think trading Grossmann just for Cap reasons is a mistake.

I agree to agree with both of you.
Also think Schenn would be a nice addition to the Phantoms. He needs to find work ethic and consistency to stay in the top 6, but probably better off on the 3rd line if he works on his defensive game. |

Technically, trading Mez for cap reasons is kind of silly too, for a lot of the same reasons the OP listed above.
It's all fallout from adding Streit at $5.5M... if they couldn't find that top-pairing guy that they really needed, they probably should have just stood pat since Mez was going to be pretty hard to trade, and they already had Gus on the up and up. How many third-pairing puck-movers does one team really need? |

Schenn doesn't belong on the Phantoms. And there isn't an issue with his work ethic. He's a top 6 forward. |

I don't think it's the same situation. Meszaros is in the last year of his deal, and has had a lot of injuries. Streit is far more then a 3rd pair puck mover. He's a top point producer from the back end, and a true PP point producer.

Let's not forget that Grossmann has a history of ongoing injury concerns, too.
As for Streit, what they desperately needed was somebody to take the tough matchups off of Timonen's hands now and in the future. What they got instead was a 3rd-pairing PP specialist when they were already top-3 in PP% and in the top third of the league in goals-for.
The Islanders were only a slightly better defensive team than the Flyers and Capuano had to hide Streit on the third-pairing at ES, especially in the PO's when he just didn't trust him to be out there against Malkin and Crosby. The Flyers could hope that pairing him w/ Grossmann or Coburn might mitigate his shortcomings, but then again Gervais was like an anchor around Coburn when they were paired up last year, and Gervais and Streit are similar players in their own zone.
People will also assume that his puck-moving should help them get out of their own end with more regularity, but that tune might change once we see his lack of foot speed and strength become a root cause for the team being hemmed in the d-zone when he's on the ice. |

Mason first and foremost is going to make the biggest difference getting out of our own end. Streit didn't need to be a timonen replacement. He's more a Mez replacement. An Expensive one yes. The kimmo replacement will come next summer

now if homer locks up schenn to a solid deal... looking very good |
