Think there were rumors that Gretzky was getting traded, too? - JAKEw1234
I know this: There were rumors that the Oilers had financial troubles at that time, because they had such a great team and players, but such a small market and an owner in Peter Pocklington who either didn't have the money or didn't want to pay higher salaries for players. |

The reality is, that they won't be trading for Alex Pietrangelo any time soon. It's like suggesting that they trade for Crosby - Jsaquella
Its kinda different strictly because we are deep at C and a franchise defenseman is lacking, but okay. Why is there is issue in just spitballing what an admitted "theoretical fantasy" value would be for Pietry though? In the dog days of summer. Don't see the hurt in that. Regardless of what is deemed "reality" |

Supposedly Phoenix curiously signed Rundblad to a two year one way contract. I think there is a shoe to drop with Yandle still this summer. I don't know if its the Flyers, and I don't want it to be. But watch Phoenix, they have a lot of dmen making serious coin.....for Phoenix. |

There's one media person in Western Canada, by the way, who will just about rip your head off if you say Wayne Gretzky was traded.
He says Gretzky was sold, no more and no less, because the main component that Peter Pocklington wanted out of the deal was the $15 million in cash he received.
Man, I don't know...I wonder if Gary Bettman would've allowed that trade to go through, pre-salary cap. That one...I wonder. |

With OEL, Yandle, now Rundblad, and Gormley coming up, as well as a good goalie and amazing goalie coach to make him look good, Phoenix is looking scary defensively. |

I'd rather him direct a 15-part miniseries of The Silmarilion.
Part 1 could basically be everything up to the elves awakening.
Part 2 would be everything up to Feanor's death.
You could do 2 parts of Turin and 4 parts of Beren.
You could extend it and do 2 more parts of Numenor. - jmatchett383

I don't see the hurt, either.
But let's be realistic to a degree. St Louis trading Pietrangelo would be like the Flyers trading Giroux. |

He is but I'd probably prefer William Nylander but he'd likely be pushing for #1 overall and yes he is the son of Michael Nylander - ob18
I thought this McDavid kid was gonna be the second coming? |

Different era & situation. Back then Peter Pocklington had already started to sell off the Oilers dynasty teams.
There was no cap and Pocklington was losing a ton of money. |

I knew full well of the money and the specs of that trade, but never thought of it that way.
That's a fantastic point. Wow. |

It's true. The $15mm paid for Gretzky was probably enough cash to pay for 90% of the Oilers payroll in 1990...In his last year with the Oilers, Gretzky was paid $717,250.

It's completely true. I knew that before the fact. But I just never connected it to "selling" #99. In my mind, it was a trade and a trade only....
EDIT: 717k for Gretzky in his prime. How the times have changed.... |

Most of the other guys from that team got traded as soon as they asked for bigger money. Coffey, Messier, Lowe...the only two that didn't get dumped immediately after some kind of contract dispute were Fuhr and Anderson, IIRC. |

In 2010, the Flyers had to win a shootout the last game of the Season to get in the playoffs. They went to the Cup Finals. - MJL
And again I'm not aware that the 2010 flyers won the cup. And be real about the 2010 run. We got lucky that the top seeds got knocked out early. And again our d got exposed in the finals as it always has and always will |

They got to the Finals and had a legitimate shot to win it all. Whether they got lucky or not. It doesn't change the fact that once you get in the playoffs, anything can happen. |
