Not sure they'ed say that. - honesthockey
Sure they would. They had Beauchemin for free and let him go only to give up a PPG winger and a good young puck-moving D 18 months later.

Yes, found it
"An arbitrator can choose either salary or a figure between. Teams can't walk away from any award less than $3.5 million" - LeafMan
That's a little high IMO. 2.5 would of been a bit more fair.. Prolly something the owners conceded to get something else I imagine |

I would like to ask a serious question. Does anyone think that Gardiner is a real trade possibility? He is not a Carlyle type player and has been treated accordingly. I am sure they discussed it with Randy prior to trading him from the Ducks. He spent most of the year on the marlies and only got called up after his agent went public with comments .He was also a healthy scratch several games. I believe he is also rfa next summer. - jiri_crha
"treated accordingly"
He was put with the Marlies for 2 reasons. 1) to recover from the concussion, and 2) because he was against his limit for waiver eligibility.
If they kept him up with the Leafs from the beginning, they would have had to waive him to send him back down when it was clear he wasn't ready to play yet. And after his agent made his statements and he was called up... he still wasn't ready. Which is why he sat. Come the playoffs, he showed he was ready, and despite making some mistakes, was used heavily. |

..well, you CAN lol. I doubt Franson gets more than 3M per so the Leafs could walk away if they wanted to. - Colin Dambrauskas
I meant before a team could walk away from any amount, not now
as posted on last page:

how many games has Lupul played for Carlyle as a Leaf? - Gary_B.
Randy admitted he made a mistake with Lupul. They have patched things up between them.

I know, they knew that cap was going to go down, it doesn't make sense to make it that high. |

Not unless the award is over 3.5million
And if Fraser gets more than 3.5 I'll think the world is ending - Dozzer
I don't think this is accurate for Player Elected Arbitrations.
edit - Just found it, 3.5m is right. My bad. |

There had to be some sort of give and take with that one.. It's the only explanation that makes sense. I can't see the owners being particularly fond of that clause |

Well, like I mean...hes the coach, and decides who plays or not...so... - Colin Dambrauskas
Yeah, but I think he's willing to work with a 21 year old with a high ceiling rather than just saying "not my type of player". |

Randy has no time for players who are head and shoulders above their teammates in areas like skating, passing, vision. - 1979AD
The notion that there are "coach X type players" is in relation to those who arent top end talent. Should go without saying. Doesnt mean guys like Kessel and Gardiner dont learn from their coach and systems, however. |

Sometimes I think Randy was intentionally trying to sabotage the team. This is reason 1A. Do you think Boston was paying him off? |

I agree. It doesn't apply to top-end talent, but the pluggers who fill out the bottom lines. |

PPG winger? In 66 games once. Totally unreliable. And the book is still out on Robert Gordon.
