Even TJ will like that deal. Nice! $4.6M remaining for Step. Pyatt should still be moved for some breathing room though. |

4.6M Gotta look at it closer. Asham, Powe were sent down, Aaron Johnson won't be with the big club. |

Powe and Asham will be here for the 1st month cause of Callahan and Hagelin. Both Hags and Cally can't go on LTIR, realy it's 2.9 million. |

Not so sure about that. If a player is hurt and requires a call up I am unsure how roster rules come into effect. Because on a 23 man roster if 4 people get hurt you can call up someone and aren't restricted to the 23 man rule. I also have to imagine for injuries if a guy goes down and you are up against the cap you can't not call someone up because of the cap. I think there is relief there in some form. And for the time being we aren't playing games so Stepan can be signed as if Cally and Hags are healthy and the rest should work out normal.
aka. What if Hags and Cally both got hurt Game 1 with everyone there and signed? We wouldn't be SOL. That's not how it works. |

Use haley instead of asham should free up a little. And maybe there are bonuses on a contract or 2that frees up even more?
What aabout miller? I dont think he counts on capgeek and he'll probably be up here. |

Mats Zuccarello has settled with the NYR -- 1 year @ $1,150,000
 - jimbro83
Wow, that is a sweet deal. He is an absolute steal at that price. Is he still restricted next year? |

Gee, I guess all those rumors of Zucc looking for more than $2MM were a little overblown. Fair contract IMO. He gets the chance to prove over a full season what he is worth before hitting free agency again. If he has a nice season he will cash in next year when the cap goes up.
So, with Zucc signed the Rangers have about $2.5MM under the cap. If they demote Powe ($925,000 savings) and Johnson ($600,000 savings) that gives the Rangers about $4MM under to sign Step without trading anyone else or demoting them. |

Some highlights:
"This guy is an injury prone to the Rangers. Get a kid out of college. Make the ranger a young team so later on they can pose a minor threat for years to come. That's just my opinion."
"I don't get it. We work out a deal with this midget and let Ryan Clowe walk and sign with the jersey swamp rats... Because this is what the Rangers need... miniature forwards instead of big, physical forwards like Clowe."
"Who cares sign Stephan" |

Asham and Powe are still on the summer cap. They were waived but since no one picked them up they will have to be waived again prior to the season starting in order to be sent down. If a player is neither sent down or claimed on waivers then the team must waive that player again 30 days later. Plus if Cally and/or Hags out to start the season the Rangers will need to keep someone up front with the team to start the season. May be Kristo or another kid or could be Asham. |

I think a legitimate argument can be made, as it has on this board, that he doesn't necessarily fit with the Rangers roster. I can see that argument. But, I think he has a very high skill and battle level, and let's face it, in the modern day NHL shootout prowess is another factor that teams need to consider.
Yes, I think he could have gotten more in arbitration. I think he is worth way more than that salary. But, I am still not sure whether he is a UFA or RFA next year, which may explain the one year deal at a low price. He may be looking to make his best deal next year if he is a UFA.

Well if we are going off summer cap we can add $6.4M to our available cap space for getting a deal done with Step as we get 10% more in the summer. |

He is RFA I believe as he hasn't played enough games. I believe if this was an awarded contract and the Rangers match then he is a UFA after. But since this is a normal signing being under 26 with not enough games played then he is a RFA. Don't hold me to that.
EDIT: Per Wiki: A player may only declare himself to be an unrestricted free agent if he is over the age of 27 or has played in the league for a minimum of 7 years. |

So, are we going to have a boring remainder of the off-season with Stepan signing at some point, and not much else? Or does something interesting happen? |
