I disagree, where we ALWAYS get burned is on UFA deals.
We have given one home grown RFA Ranger too much money since the salary cap started, ONE. And that was Dubinsky.
I think Stepan is as important as McDonagh and should be treated the same. - jimbro83
he might be as important, but mcdonagh got paid because he's been godlike for more than just 1 half season. if stepan put up 70 points the year before the lockout, then yea, he'd be getting mcdonagh money too. but he didn't. and he has no leverage. so he will get buttfcked by sather like every other RFA besides mcdonagh. |

i just don't think stepan should be getting paid as much as mcdonagh. stepan has the potential to maybe be a 1st line center, while mcdonagh WILL be a norris candidate for a LONG LONG time. call me crazy, but i think stepan should be paid less than mcdonagh because of that. |

You're right, but it doesn't matter to Slats. He could be the 2nd coming of Stan Mikita, which he might be, he's going to treat him as he has treated the others. It's how he conducts business. |

I agree, but, if the Islanders had acted like Sather does, they wouldn't have Tavares locked up at 5.5 million a year until 2018.
Derek Stepan is the best home grown forward this team has developed since.....trying to think of someone better.....still trying..... - jimbro83
Agreed. I think Garth signs good contracts because he signed Hamonic to a similar contract. |

Seriously? I know you hate the isles and I hate the rags but you should be able to admit JT is better. Nash didn't show up for the playoffs and JT had more points during the season. |

He had 28 goals this year, which was more than Nash. More points than Nash, same amount of playoff points (with 6 less games), so how is Nash better. Nash was a disappointment last year. I think Nash is going to have a better year next year but as of right now, JT is the best in NY |

If I understand correctly, not only is Stepan a RFA, but he is not arbitration eligible. Only a prolonged holdout is his leverage, and of course the specter of an offer sheet. NHL GM's are extremely reluctant to offer Ranger players offer sheets, because they know if they do Slats will burn them at some point. I don't see Stepan receiving an offer sheet, and with little leverage, he finds himself not unlike Dubinsky and Del Zotto, when they were dealing with Slats with little leverage. I'm very sure Sather's take on Stepan is the same as he had with the others, "he has to wait his turn for the $$$." - OLDSCHOOL#6

It takes more than one player to create a winning team. You can ask Lafontaine if you don't believe me. Nash may not be as good but he has a much better supporting cast. |
