Leino got the secondary and he did NOTHING! This whole system is (frank)ed up

Did they really give Richards the goal on that play? He just stood there and shot, Giroux's primary assist was way more important. Giroux should have gotten the primary assist and goal for a 7-point play.

I'd give Giroux an extra point for the Callahan knockdown.

Erm, advanced stats don't take assists into account at all... only shot events, players on the ice and faceoff locations.
- Tomahawk

Erm, sure it does. Go on the advanced stats web sites. They breakdown primary and secondary assists per/60.

Bobby Clarke once hit a grand slam to win Super Bowl LXXXII, thus saving the world from an alien invasion.

Forgot about him. He's really regressed though. He's still in the top 10 though.

Thanks for the catch on Giroux's stat line -- was looking at wrong line. I fixed it.

Regarding primary vs. secondary assists, there are plenty of goals scored where the main playmaker in a goal sequence IS the guy who gets the secondary assist (or even someone who gets no assist at all because two other guys happened to touch the puck in between him and the goal being scored).

Example 1: Giroux draws two D-men to him and passes to an open Timonen at the point. The goalie makes the initial save but Hartnell immediately jams in the rebound. Giroux clearly was the one who was primary playmaker but he gets the secondary assist.

Example 2: Same initial sequence as above but now lets say the goalie makes a second save but Voracek forces the puck over the line as it sits in the crease. Now Giroux gets no assist.

0.70 Assists/G despite being saddled with a defenseman as his primary winger all season long? IMO, he's still top-3, easily.

Kris Letang moves the puck as well as any forward in the game. You have to find a place for him in the top ten. I hate him but he has to be there.

Bryz finally has an offer on the table:

Too bad it's from a KHL expansion club playing literally in Far Eastern Siberia. Makes Winnipeg look like Honolulu.

Notice the two separate assist columns:
http://www.nhl.com/scores...rts/20122013/GS030416.HTM

And NHL.com keeps track of Assists/Game. Assist/60 is just a normalized version of the same stat.

- Tomahawk

That's a Game summary. You can't list both names on top of each other. Go to NHL.com, which keeps the official stats of the League, and see if you can find under assists, a listing for primary and secondary assists. You won't find it.

Behindthenet gets all their raw data from NHL game reports/summaries... if the NHL wasn't separating primaries from secondaries in their data keeping to begin with, tracking them would be impossible. If you want to blame somebody for the A1/A2 distinction, blame the league.
