Behindthenet gets all their raw data from NHL game reports/summaries... if the NHL wasn't separating primaries from secondaries in their data keeping to begin with, tracking them would be impossible. If you want to blame somebody for the A1/A2 distinction, blame the league. - Tomahawk
The League doesn't make a distinction. Both assists are recorded as simply an assist in the official NHL stats. It's the advanced stats guys who have tried to make a case that a primary assist is better then a secondary. And that was the genesis of this entire discussion that began on page 1.
The issue isn't the raw data. It's the misuse of it in some cases. |

So one person wondering out loud about primary assists on an HB thread is somehow grounds for bashing an entire community of hockey fans? Talk about inappropriate use of arbitrary evidence. |

I personally put more stock in a secondary goal than either a primary or secondary assist. |

Having secondary assists = primary assists in judging a player's "playmaking" ability is foolish imo.
But the NHL says they're equal, so let's just follow protocol and we'll all be wiser. - bradleyc4
Some times the secondary assist is even more crucial in the goal than the primary. It all depends on the way the play develops.
SO yes, lets just follow the protocol.

To be fair though.. That would be a Play Starter... Not a Play Maker...
I could have played defense with "The Great One" and had hundreds of assists. Doesn't make me suck any less than I do.
It is funny to see, that when advanced stats fit a persons agenda, they preach how great they are. When they don't, they're dismissed as useless information.

So you think I formed that opinion based on one poster's comments? That is an arbitrary statement. Nor is there any bashing of an entire community of hockey fans. What is being discussed is the belief that a primary assist is better then a secondary assist. And that belief has been cultivated by the Advanced stat guru's. Time and again, I've read by numerous hockey fans using secondary assists as a means to lessen the impact of a player who has a high total off assists. It's not based on one post. Any idea what was behind why one poster was wondering about primary assists? |

This off season has sucked more than any other in recent history. I dunno... maybe hockey is starting to bore me as I get older. Even the games are boring as crap anymore.

Nobody was even discussing advanced stats until you decided to take your random pot-shot.
Assists are as traditional of a stat as you can get, and people were debating primaries vs secondaries long before Gabriel Desjardins and Co. started doing their thing. |

No, Communist would be to not award a goal to a single person, but all 6 players on the ice get 1/6 of a goal... |
