Quick contract question:
Last year, Mike Knuble had signed a contract (tryout contract) with Grand Rapids of the AHL. Just to repeat that, he'd signed with Grand Rapids, not with the Detroit Red Wings. My question is whether or not an AHL team can sign a player independent of the NHL parent club. In other words, could the Phantoms sign a player like Denis Hamel to an AHL contract and not have that count against the 50 contract limit? I know that certain minor league baseball teams sign players to minor league deals, but I'm not sure if baseball had any rules at all about roster limits/contracts/steroids/etc.

Yes, the Phantoms can sign a player to a straight up minor league contract. That player does not count against the parent club's 50-contract limit but the player is also ineligible to play for the parent club while under minor-league contract.

i did. it didn't help. i might have to break out the flyers 10 dvd box set pretty soon.

Yes, the Phantoms can sign a player to a straight up minor league contract. That player does not count against the parent club's 50-contract limit but the player is also ineligible to play for the parent club while under minor-league contract.

For instance, if the Flyers wanted to keep ties as a show of good faith to Eric Wellwood, it seems the Phantoms could have signed him to the deal so that he stays a part of the organization but does not affect this year's cap/roster limit. Of course, that could affect his RFA status and the Flyers could lose his rights.

Basically, any more veteran player that the Flyers do not see as projecting as an NHL player (Sim, Syvret, Ford, Laliberte, Fitzgerald, Munroe) seems like an AHL contract is the way to go. If this is the case with those players this past season then...well, good job I guess.

I brought this along on a bus trip to a Devil's game. I now only have 8 discs, as two of them were lost when the police had to raid the bus and take all of its contents as part of an ongoing investigation.

Tell me about it. I watched the Classic Series show on NHL Network last night. It was the 2010 ECSF vs. Boston. Goodness, I loved that team. I remembered vividly Games 3, 4, & 6 because of being at the WFC. I DVR'd it so I have some good hockey to watch the rest of this summer.

Those players have to be willing to sign that type of contract. And there are also pension issues, and other concerns along that line.
