We had Morganti and Greenberg. Say what you will about what Al has become on that goofball morning show but he was a tremendous hockey writer and even today when he turns a serious eye toward the sport the man knows what he's talking about. - mayorofangrytown
Agreed 100%. Al jumped the shark when he starting putting out trade rumors on ESPN. |

Can somebody explain the 'magic loogey' theory to me? It seems plausible when I put my thinking hat on.

Its gotten so bad I long for the days of Rich Hoffman and Les Bowen doing the Flyers beat.

I also yearn for the days of opening up a newspaper to the sports page while on my front porch and just Les out. |

The Broad Street Bullies era Flyers also had tremendous local beat writers in Jack Chevalier and Bill Fleischman especially. The 1980s had the likes of Jay Greenberg and Al Morganti. A bit like the Flyers' teams of those eras, those were VERY tough acts to follow for anyone who came afterwards. Also it should be noted that, very quietly, Wayne Fish has been on the Flyers beat in Bucks County since Shero's final season as coach -- he's covered a lot of team history in that time. - bmeltzer
You nailed it. I have told my older son -- and will tell my second son -- that he can your blog (but not the comments until he's much older!) and ASF's & Wayne Fish's articles and that's about it. I already told him not to listen to Boruk at all, but to take in what Morganti, Tocchet, & Lappy have to say. Of course, Lappy has since moved on to join the Flyers organization. |

I don't think Rich ever covered the beat. He's a columnist (and the best one in Philly, IMO). Les, who was a big help to me when I was just getting started in hockey writing, was a solid and conscientious Flyers beat writer who came to have a good on the sport after having very little exposure to hockey prior to getting that assignment. The only issue I ever had with Les' writing was the common tendency to either over-credit or over-blame the goaltenders for certain wins or losses. |

I'm a big fan of Clement. Love when he and JJ do the games.
I never had any problems with Jackson. I'm in the minority, apparently.... - Giroux_Is_God
Clement prevents the broadcast from going too far into goofball territory, unlike Jonesy who drives there with his pedal to the metal. JJ is much better with BC than KJ in the colour commentator's seat. |

no one has said that
MOAT just loathes Keith Primeau
there are rumors that Primeau actually spit on him as they passed each other while walking toward the parking lot after a game. - Crimsoninja
People said it. Too many people said it. They said it on here and meant it.

In Jonsey's defense, Bill Clement has done that job, very well, for a very long time.....Keith Jones was in college when Bill Clement was calling games. |

Les also doesn't like to be corrected. Apparently, despite the fact I've worked in newspapers for more than thirty years, I don't understand the pressure he has at dead line so he was forced to block my emails. |
