The Canadian teams can compete with the cash, but not with the geography. Edmonton regularly gets to -20 C and -30 C for some of the winter. Not exactly the place I want to be if money doesn't matter. New York is likely (I've never been there) one of the top 10 cities in the world for desirability when money is not a problem. You do realize that Pronger played one year in Edmonton, took them to within 1 game of the cup then asked for a trade? Since then, it has even been worse for Edmonton to attract top free agents or even players with NMC or NTC's. (See Vanek, Penner RFA offer sheets; Heatly trade, Nylander, Hossa, etc........) Therefore, teams like Edmonton must build through the draft.
If you look at the Oilers from 91-2005 (60c Canadian dollar had a lot to do with it), they competed for 8th place at best. Sometimes made the playoffs, sometimes just missed. As a result drafted around middle of the pack. A team that is in a city (with plenty of fan support through thick and thin) that isn't desirable for free agents can never get better. - Al Hacker
but it's a dry cold isn't it? but seriously, I hadn't considered it that bad but I guess it is from a players perspective, I always thought Edmonton was a cool little city but what do I know. Maybe with the team getting better it'll attract some new talent, otherwise you guys are eternally fu*ked. You could keep rebuilding through the draft and your top players will eventually hit ufa status so yuo still have some type of window management has to consider.

Dry cold in Alberta, and despite popular and idiotic opinion, not -30 6 months of the year. |

I read this article without looking, thinking it was Meltzer's. I thought he went nuts at first. Thank god its just an article from the one of the many dodos who post for other teams. - TrentKlatt

That's an argument that bottom-feeders don't like, because they already get every subsidy in the book when drafting.
Bottom-feeders want it every which way they can get it: Don't spend more money than us. Give us higher draft picks. Don't sign our free agents. Don't bully us with offer sheets -- but ignore us when we sign Dustin Penner and Thomas Vanek to offer sheets. Make there be a salary cap so our franchise can compete.
It just never stops, with bottom-feeders. - AllInForFlyers

What if all of the teams that paid into (you know the successful ones) revenue sharing were able to spend over by the same amount? - Marshalle
Worthy of discussion. Seems more fair than the hard cap ceiling / floor as first glance. |

actually I live in northern NJ, and was 14 years old when the devils moved to jersey, family has been a season ticket holder since day one. so I became a devils fan because the team showed up on my door step. |
