Why the he'll would the Canucks be 12-1. I should come work for u guys. So if no one bet on pittsburg would the odds sky rocket or just move up to say 7-1 - Snagglepuss
A lot of people laughed that the Pens were the favorite over Chicago. Here is an example, Tiger Woods hasn't won a major in 5 years? Yet for the Masters he was only 3/1 to win the tournament. A smart bookmaker knows you don't make a guy (team) a high risk when you know the betting customer is going to jump on the players/teams that they know are good and always have a chance to win. Again, we set a guide, the bettors determine which way the odds move. To answer your question: if no one is betting the Pens but they have the best record in hockey then no, why would we move them? If no one is betting and they are a borderline playoff team then yes, we move them. I would love to have you armchair bookies see what it takes to make and move numbers.

If u want gamblers placing lots of bets you should be putting teams like Canucks at least 25-1 to start the year, which might get the betting pubic tossing dollars down early and often, if u wait for the whole season before their value climbs u inturn have less people spending money. - Snagglepuss
Sorry, but you're incorrect. We get plenty of money on all future bets regardless of the odds. Every year by March the Cubs are 10/1 to win the World Series, not our fault, that's how much money we get on them. Do you have any idea how many casino's have been built on Cubs future bets? |

So your opinion is that the Leafs have a far better chance than the Habs?
 - Joel_Eh
Easily - Habs should be 1000-1 |

yeah i can lecture the habs on the playoffs. Oh i forgot, they won in 93 so i guess i should shut up.
we're talking about next year, and the habs got smoked by ottawa without spezza, and with anderson and karlsson on the limp. - clark_griswold

This may sound harsh so dont crucify me but i think the main reason the leafs made the playoffs was due to a crazy high shooting percentage. They were tied for last in shot differentials and if that continues and Lupul stops scoring on a quarter (literally had a 26.2% shooting percentage) of his shots and Kadri on 16% of his i think the leafs could struggle. - Joel_Eh
Leafs were on a down trend at the end of the season. Kadri had a pretty bad last month. If there was another two months they likely would not have made the playoffs.
Teams get lucky sometimes and go on hot streaks. Look at Oilers in 06. You think they deserved to go all the way to game 7 of the cup final? Leaf fans saying "we took Boston to ot in game 7!" Doesn't mean poop. Edmonton missed the playoffs the next season. Look at Colorado a few years ago. They went on a hot streak and made the playoffs. Everyone was excited and the next couple years they crashed again. Just saying Leaf fans should temper their expectations otherwise they may be in for a big let down this year... |

Oilers at 30/1 is an awful bet. I'd put them more realistically at 100/1. - Scooby_Doo
Bout the same as the Canucks then.
And, unfortunately, the Flyers realistically.

I dont' think any leafs fans think cup for next year. Playoffs is reasonable, and we are built to be a team that is at least one that is nasty to play against.
as for the leafs on a down trend, they were, but still won some key games down the stretch and not one team below them was on any kind of roll to threaten the leafs chances. Just my opinion of course. I think every year they have been learning, again it's what the youngest or 2nd youngest team? the collapse 2 years ago was a learning curve, as was game 7 last year.
Im not saying the leafs are a cup favorite but I don't think they lucked into the playoffs like florida did 2 years ago. It's a team that is young tough and has depth. Is It enough to make the playoff? I don't know, but that could be said for ALOT of teams |

Flyers have so many good young pieces, just need to package some for some D or a goalie. Philly should have been all over Schneider at the draft. Same with bernier. |

I like Ottawa as a longshot bet, because they did well without their top C, G and D last year. I don't like Vancouver at those odds at all...they"re still a good team but I think they"re a longer shot than that. |

You could also say teams catch some bad luck and bad bounces - leafs should have made the playoffs at least 1 of the 2 previous seasons - playing lights out and then losing 20 in a row isn't the norm either.

The argument in favour of the leafs only making it due to a short season is probably because of the unsustainable shooting percentage.
They likely couldnt maintain that over 82 games so they probably would have dropped...would they still have made it - i have no clue. - Joel_Eh
What's funny is when the Leafs were a playoff team the previous season and collapsed the final 6 weeks, the haters caimed that 6 weeks was the real team. This season, the Leafs made the playoffs in 48 games but that's too small a sample size
No other team is being accused of only making it because it was a shortened season. |

The #1 reason the Leafs made the playoffs is they had their best goaltending by far in 9 years. They also were completely opposites in P/K and were very good. The previous years under Wilson they were always 29th and 30th overall. |
