JVR with the poopshot - KINGKENZO
Gotta do whatchya gotta do man.
As Elton would say (and Lennon, I suppose, since he sang the backing vocals), "Whatever gets ya through the night"
EDIT: I can hear the disappointment in Pierre's voice already.... |

Actually, that was Lennon's song, with Elton doing harmony.

I had it backwards I'm so ashamed
That was the "wager" song! Elton thought it'd be a #1, Lennon called bullpoop. Elton told bet him it'd reach #1 and said if it did so, John would have to get up on stage with him in NYC at the Garden.
Turned out it was a #1 hit and John played with Elton much to the surprise of everyone there and held up the bet.
It was his last live performance
EDIT: The reason I had it mixed up was because at the time of that writing I was listening to Fame, which Lennon ACTUALLY did the background vocals on!! |

Same except Kapanen instead of Voracek. - Coburns_Nose
Kapanen is in my top 6 too. He had more heart than any Flyer I've ever watched. Him and Lappy are neck and neck in that department. His two way game for being undersized was tremendous. Wouldn't it be great if he were coaching in our ranks.

I want to see Pronger and Lappy coach pretty badly. |

You remind me of how much times have changed... I remember listening to Gene Hart doing the pre-game radio show before game 7. That was the extent of the coverage, no TV pre-game and the radio show was no more than an hour. We got it good nowdays in terms of coverage. - 2731color
I wasn't around for Gene Hart. But from the few classic games I've watched I'm pretty comfortable saying he's the best commentator the city's had in the last 40 or so years. Better than Harry. |

no
EDIT: It's not fair of me to jump in like that. I didn't listen to Hart. I'm 19. However, I grew up listening to Harry and he holds a special place in my heart along with the city's. I've listened to Hart on classic games like you, and in my opinion, Kalas is in another league. |

Both were legends on merit. Harry esp. earlier on would have no problem dishing it to a phillie if he needed it. Love that. |

That deflection off Chara's point shot. I know exactly what you mean. I thought it was going in too. Same with Chara's shot with about 1 minute left from the other side that just missed glove side |

No.
It's easier to call a slow-paced game where lineups don't change on the fly, etc. The 9 (or 10 if an AL game) don't change with nearly the same speed. As good as Harry the K was, Gene Hart's listeners learned a heck of a lot about hockey compared to what Kalas' listeners learned of baseball from him. |

Hold on.
Are we talking about the most....I dunno....iconic announcer? Or the best announcer in terms of actual commentating skills?
Harry has got to be the most iconic. He's been called a baseball icon, let alone a Philly one. I'm not so sure Philadelphia has loved a non athlete any more than him, and even if you include athletes in there he's gotta be top 5. The Phils and Harry are synonymous...
That being said, if we talk about the "better" announcer, I'd tend to agree with you in that hockey is a harder game to announce as compared to baseball (and any other sport, for that matter). I'd also agree with the fact that Hart was the "better" announcer, but this is going by word of mouth since I didn't hear him call any games, unfortunately. I don't doubt once that Hart taught so many the game and was an enjoyable personality and announcer, because countless older and wiser folks have said that about him. |
