I've always defended the Flyers' amateur scouts, and their 1st-round track-record is exemplary... but is anybody else disturbed by the lack of sophistication in the process?
First off, writing a bunch of names on big pieces of paper in marker? What is this, 1981? You're telling me nobody in the room knows how to use a laptop, projector and a spreadsheet program? There are home-brewed fantasy leagues that have more advanced pre-draft tool-kits than this.
No comprehensive numerical scoring system? No internal metrics being discussed at all? Week of the draft and they're refining their rankings based on who they think will "hit a guy with his stick" and general musings about who might have more "upside"?
Wow.
And, boy, do they love Mirco Mueller. I guess one Swiss dman just isn't enough. - Tomahawk
I didn't go into it expecting them to pull the curtain back that far, anyhow. I doubt that Morin was ahead of other because he's more likely to hit a guy with his stick

That's certainly putting a negative spin on it. It's not like the meeting lasted only the 10 minutes of the webisode. There was obviously more to it and what was showed was just a small glimpse and I don't know why anyone would expect this org. to fully divulge the process.
I was however surprised at the consensus of the group being that Morin had the most upside. Regardless if they felt that he would reach it. |

Exactly. I'm sure they pored over these guys with a fine toothed comb and just gave a taste for the webisode.
I found it interesting that they were so high on Mueller. He doesn't scream typical Flyer, and San Jose, who is huge on analytical research was very high on him, in fact they traded up to land him. |

I'm fairly excited for next year.
Losing Briere was a definite and replacing him with Lecavalier is huge. Dropping Bryz, and signing Emery at a fraction of the cost and being able to sign Streit with the savings (albeit at a steep price) definitely is a plus. Streit costs a lot but that's the nature of FA especially in dealing with defenseman. He is definitely a need. - GirouxForTheShow
On top of the leadership he brings, both him and Gus will hopefully skyrocket our ES numbers using their help with the transition game. His numbers at ES last year were really good (14th in points among all defenseman at ES), and from looking at this picture from our friends at broadstreethockey.com (orange circles are assists, green circles are goals)
you can see that 53% of his even strength assists came from either the defensive zone or the neutral zone, which is sort of just further evidence that he really helps the transition game. If we get our ES numbers up, continue our powerplay success, see Vinny's production go up as a result of having constant line-mates (which it should), and see BSchenn and Coots grow their offensive games (as they should), we have the potential to be an offensively dominant team |

Lava flows...
Laviolette may not be seen in the same light as when he was hired, even by me (and he was my candidate to replace John Stevens in the autumn of 2009), but he has accomplished more than the other coaches on the list. Of course, this is an opinion poll so no answer would be wrong unless one of the coaches coached the team to a dreadful season, missing the playoffs. Oh. Well, Lava only messed up a half-season that the NHL & NHLPA Seravallied up. I guess they should get more blame than anyone, especially since the lockout will not have fixed anything by the time the new CBA expires. - Flyskippy
As a flyer coach he most certainly did accomplish more and so earned my vote as well, despite my feeling with the present moment. |

Anyone notice Pronger wasn't wearing shoes during the webisode? |

Streit has had big minus numbers recently. I expect him to be more protected than Gus will against top lines.

Go figure, logic in use on HB.
I've made my thoughts known regarding Lavi this past (half-)season. That he might not be the right guy for the job anymore doesn't mean he's not the best man on the poll. |

Don't know if leight, but here are some Hagg highlights from the tourney so far. He looks awesome and well rounded. Great defensive plays, good hits, and good point work, too. He's got a very quick release on a hard slap shot, which is a good plus. I liked the part when he was confidently shutting down Yakupov.

this is leight, but worth posting again so ty.
thing that stands out to me is how casual and non-chalant most of his movements seem to be. not in a bad way though - moreso that he seems confident with the puck and where he's going with it.
both he and Morin impress me in that way.. that ability to not get rattled while making the smart, simple play |

I find it odd that they blurred the prospect list. I mean they included the parts where Pryor was flat out stating "we have Morin 6th, Mueller 7th, Zadorov 10th" etc, but still blurred all that out for some reason. Seemed pointless. |

Of course he looks poised and confident with the puck; he's Swedish. |
