Meh. He was often a Tin Man. Put Richie's drive and passion in Carter and that's almost another Lindros dominating out there.
- Flyskippy

I don't even remotely agree with that. Carter doesn't have the skills Lindros had.

Because all this overblown Carter hate stinks of WIP.

Bottom line is that Carter was a good but not great player who got a bad rap based on false assumptions.

He did come up small in the playoffs, but you cant accuse him of that without taking in to consideration the serious injuries he played through. You cant say he had no heart (see previous facts) You cant say he was a lazy guy since he routinely won the Flyers fitness challenges that happened at the beginning of training camp. He was always in top shape.

Bottom line was that he was a good two way player who played in ALL situations and was good in ALL situations.

People didn't like his style and yes he was streaky and sometimes inconsistent. As all young players are prone to be.

But to say he stunk in the playoffs (he did) without putting it in context are just showcasing an agenda which sounds just like WIP. IE ignorant sheep comments from people who know nothing about the game.

- MBFlyerfan

Where did any of us say he wasn't a good player?

Its funny you talk about people being ignorant sheep... considering the people in the area you're referring to.

I haven't lived in Philly area in almost a decade. I couldn't even tell you one person with WIP.

However, accusing others of being ignorant sheep because they disagree with your opinion is pretty much par for the course in the Philadelphia area. So tolerant you guys are up there.

Let's just all agree that, had Matt Carle and Jeff Carter played better, Michael Leighton would be a Stanley Cup champion.

I don't place the blame on either of those guys for losing that series. It wouldn't have hurt if Leighton played better... but they lost as a team.

That's a load of malarky and you know it. They lost because of Carle and Carter. And this year, if they don't make the playoffs, it's solely Streit's fault.

Is he our whipping boy for sure? Set in stone?

I was hoping B. Schenn would be the whipping boy.

I went Forsberg, Roenick, and Kapanen. Carter vs Kapanen was my tough one.

Agree completely with the head coaching argument. I voted Lava but would absolutely take Hitch over Lava if I was hiring a guy today. I definitely believe in defense first.

- five4fighting10

Roenick vs Carter was my tough one. Forsberg and Kapanen were locks to me. Ultimately, even though I like JR better, Carter was a better player for the Flyers.

Technically, he really only stunk in two playoffs.. In the other three he had a combined 20 points in 33 games.

But we need to have a scapegoat!!!

Can't just admit that another team was better, we need somebody to blame!!

That was exactly how I saw it.

Foppa is my favorite player of all time. I watched Flyers Foppa highlights the other day and it made me realize how ridiculous he was. It looked like the puck was literally on a string.

Sami was the ultimate "peoples champ". Combine that with the fact that he was able to play all four non-goalie positions, while being decent offensive contributor and outworking just about everyone else... no brainer.

Carter was a very solid player for us. The off ice "issues" were vastly overblown, but where theres smoke theres smoke.. I firmly believe that if those accusations were not so over blown... he would be more fondly remembered.

the thing that plagued Carter is the same thing that plagued Rick MacLeish-people felt he didn't work hard enough. I think Carter's biggest issue was that some times his feel for the game went awry. When he struggled, it seemed that he was overthinking and ending up being indecisive, where the comparison piece for that era was Richards, where it was all kinetic energy and aggression.

Im sure the 5-10 posters- who usually whine and complain about the players who have relatively limited actual negative affect on the game- will assure you of their selection.

I agree with the Richards bit. Unfortunately (or fortunately from strictly an age stand point) I wasnt around for MacLeish.

One of Carters skills was also a big reason people hated on him. He is an extremely gifted skater. He doesnt take Ovechkin strides where ice is flying everywhere, or Richard where it looks dogged and he is fighting through anyway.. Carter is amazingly fluid. It looks like he isnt working. On the negative side, Carter never really used his skating ability, stride, size, etc. as a weapon to crash the net with the puck. I dont know if it is because he lacks top end puck handling skills, but he rarely would use his speed, burn past a d-man and head towards the net. Instead he would beat the defense and then the goalie with a wicked shot. I think people wanted him to dirty his game up a bit... and thats where he lost a bit of the fan base.

You should go find your missing posters and stick with them. In other words, make like a banana and split.
