1st, I don't hate the guy. Saying he's perhaps not a long-term answer and saying I hate the guy are two completely separate things.
2nd, my point was, the Oilers need to play Smid in a 1/2 role because they don't have better options. On a team with good D, he'd be, at best, a 3/4 guy. In saying this, I'm not insulting him at all. I'm being realistic.
3rd, why do you think the guys has to block so many shots? Because he can't keep up. He's an absolute warrior, like a Jason Smith. Every team benefits from having a guy who will do anything, especially when it comes to sacrificing himself to make a play. But quit being so emotionally attached to the player and look at him objectively. His offense has never been there, he's not brilliant at moving the puck out of his zone, and blocks often indicate a defense's inability to skate. In a 5/6 role, at a reasonable contract amount, I'd love him. But as a 1/2? He's not that good. And the fact the Oilers need to use him that way indicates roster issues, not issues with Smid himself. - Maxbone

Khaira won't be ready for 2013/2014, but you never know for 2014/2015. I think he could be a solid 3rd line winger for the Oilers in a few seasons. - Maxbone
That's what I meant, 2014/2015 season he might see some action. I think he'll do great this season in OKC if that's where he goes. |

I can't believe how clueless this Richard guy is.
I doubt he even follows the Oilers, he just imagines his reality and runs with it. |

You're right: I write about the team every single day...sometimes more than once...but I don't follow them.
Is there a 1-800 number I can call to get some better trolls? The quality is really starting to fall off. Ever since Pilgor starting using the name Iggysbff... |

They could just dip into the UFA market. Morrow, Prospal, Antropov, Lombardi, Cleary, Malhotra, Raymond, Ponikarovsky, and some others are all still around. Many of them would be good additions to a 3rd line, and many could be had short term at a relatively low hit. |

I've been saying Raymond for a long time. At least he could play with Hemsky on the third line since we're keeping him around. But nobody seems to agree. |

Smid is a great 3/4 Dman. I agree that we need a top 2 guy, but you also need solid bottom paring D as well. You dont see to many mistakes from him, his skating isnt the best but i wouldnt say thats the reason he blocks so many shots. Its a big part of his game, why cut him down for it. From what I can see he is a big part of the room as well. Our D is weak as it is, if he is traded for a bottom 6 player it is worse. |

we need a more physical player, someone that will push other around not get pushed around ie: Cluster(frank) |

I see there's no middle ground between 1/2 and 5/6 that Smid can be. Why do I think he has to block so many shots? Because he's a shut down D man. Like the Hjalmarssons, Coburns, Regehrs, Methots, and Jackmans of the world. Doesn't mean he isn't top 4.
He played #3 minutes in EDM and getting paid like a 3-4. I don't know if Smid ran over your foot or made you drop you ice cream, but your dislike for him is unwarranted. He's a fine D man and certainly top 4. It doesn't matter how often you write blogs about EDM, you're wrong 80% of the time which leads us to question if you even watch the games. Call it trolling if you want, we're pointing out what you do poorly in a non-agressive way |

Antropov ain't physical. Also he just signed in Russia. Morrow's a poor possession player. EDM was among the worst teams in that regard last year. I'd rather dump N Schultz and sign a guy like Cleary or even Grabo if he'd come to EDM. Not for physicality, because they are good |

Often your defensive group is a reflection of your #1 Dman. So a team looks weak on the blue line, they bring in a #1 and suddenly all their Dmen appear to improve.
We know Ottawa has always liked Smid and you hear talks about a deal for the big man. Nothing got finalized so Ottawa moved on and dealt Foligno for Methot. Last year Methot had a very good year and gets an invite the Team Canada try outs.
Point being is maybe Smid and some other Dmen are better than their reviews and what is missing is the lead dog who can help them all elevate their game. |

Why is nobody talking about the most obvious solution to the bottom 6 problem? Brendan Morrow is a perfect fit for this team. Physical banging winger with leadership - former captain and team canada olympic gold winner... he is the PERFECT fit for a team desperate for size and leadership and physicality and depth in the bottom 6. Perfect with Gordon and Jones.
the best part, you dont have to give up any assets.. 3 yr 10M... Get on it MacT! |

an offer sheet to Pietrangelo at this point seems like a no brainer too. As you said, teams dont normally trade #1 or #2 dmen, so give up a bunch of future picks and offer Piets a 7 yr 49M deal... StL will undoubtedly match, but at least MacT can say he tried for that missing #1 top dog. |
