For the most part he was given and signed a bad contract. More then what he's worth and the length was much too long. Bryzgalov update have been much better here but it doesn't change the fact the defense had to be retooled every bit as much as the defense. - dingo8urbaby
Hard to re-tool a defense when we played so very many different defensemen last season! I'll let someone else come up with the real # but it was a TON.
But I get your point last year can't happen again - our D stunk. So much of this is luck... And being able to predict who will stay healthy. And then adjusting tactics to opponents and injuries. |

I think he'd have to play better than Adam Hall to make the team... - JAKEw1234
That's my point. If he plays better than a journeyman center making the league minimum signed to a 1-year contract at training camp, he should be given at least a 9-game tryout. |

Defensemen are my favorite players on the ice usually and I hold them to high standards. I adore Grossmann. That man saves his goalie's bacon at least 5 or 6 times a game which is why I shake my head when people want to get rid of him. He's been very good for us. I can't wait for Luke and Gus to show up next season with a ton of confidence... Timo is a class act - such a smart player. I have never watched Streit play so I'll hold my opinion. Mez is fantastic when healthy. I really hope that if we keep him he stays that way. And Coburn is damn good as well. There is a reason teams asked for him at the draft. He gets a ton of heat here but played correctly he's very good.
Injuries kill us. I'm still miffed at the hockey gods for Pronger. - FlyersGrace

Injuries did hurt us, but its not the reason for our lack of sucess last season. Each of these guys are very solid guys. But as a unit they are a bit slow, with not much puck moving ability... Now add Striet this year, and a goalie that is able to set up the puck for them or pass it to a d-man in stride, and not only will the defense look better, our 5-5 will be back at the top again. |

"Bryz sucks" was def a part of the reason. Cause if he didnt suck he would still be a flyer. No doubt - GOA88
I don't think he sucks. Don't take this as me saying he was 'very good' either, he definitely didn't live up to the expectations. He was good at times, not so much at others. I don't hate him, but I'm not sad to see him go. |

Well I think we can all agree he isnt a star goalie as advertised. He was exposed in Philly. He was slow, lacked confidence, Had no fire, Couldnt come up clutch. Couldnt stop a breakaway to save his life. His 5-hole was horrific as well |

That makes you tough, nearly as insane as a goalie when blocking shots with less pads, and you gain a unique perspective as you skate backwards most of the time. Plus the pinnacle of your day is screwing someone else up. Always satisfying!

That is one incredibly wild piece of work. And I believe it's entirely privately funded.
What they've accomplished so far is nothing short of amazing. |

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of Bryz… |

I hope you're right about the turn around.
And I'll contain my whining over injuries to a minimum
I think Gus might be able to step up into that fast skating puck mover role as well this season. |

My wife just says I look sexy when I skate backwards. She's wrong; I always look sexy.
But yeah, defense is so much more fun to play than forward. |

To clarify, as well, I'm not saying his failure to live up to expectations wasn't a factor. It was absolutely a big part of the decision. They wouldn't have bought him out if he was just a problematic personality with a big cap hit while still winning games for the team. |

"To suck, or not to suck, that is the question:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of Philadelphia fans,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of Panaccios,
And by opposing be bought out: to die, to sleep
No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
The soft-goals, and the thousand Natural shocks
That turnovers are heir to?"

Pffft...
Know, O Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars. Thither came Ilya, a philosopher, a n imploder, to tread on the hopes of Flyers faithful beneath his skating feet |
