this is so old....can anyone find me a newer/relevant source that indicates that the Avs have been dealing with internal budgets for like 5 years straight!?
Im pretty sure it was shortlived and no longer an issue. No they are not likely going to spend right up to the cap, but I dont think this is an "issue" any longer. - Colin Dambrauskas
I'm asking not telling. I was wondering because there are teams that don't go to the ceiling.

If he sees himself this way at this point he's delusional. He literally didn't even win a starting job until this past year.
Someone said he should get paid because he's 26. Well why didn't he win a starter's job before he was in his mid-20's? He's an RFA...he has almost no rights. Same with Kadri.
These guys need to learn what their union brothers negotiated for, and why. They're not bigger than the CBA. Let them sit. - djamon
whaaat? you're just altering facts to support a lowball offer. Franson was a full time d man for 2 seasons for pretty good Nashville teams. and he still played 57 games in 2011-2012. he has 4 NHL seasons under his belt. you can't change that no matter how much you want it not to be true.

In that case, I really dont think so. Teams do have internal budgets but from my understandings the Avs (while they had such problems) no longer do. But they wont be a team spending to the cap either way.

Well, the Leafs are your employer and they must look out for their organization needs as much as you need to look out for your own. They feel your current value to the team is X dollars and are willing to pay you for your services for X years...if you feel otherwise you make your case.
It goes back and forth but the decision is ultimately up to the boss who has a certain amount of money to extend to the employee who feels they deserve a big raise. If they cannot agree on the dollar term, than that employee can sit and watch everyone else work happily together.
Yes, its in the employers best interest to keep their employees happy, but they cannot be throwing away valuable cap dollars. The player needs to understand where they sit in their career and if they are good with discussions now, they will likely be rewarded down the road for it. - Colin Dambrauskas
a lot of people would say that that's exactly what Nonis did and why he finds himself in this situation.
He must have since he signed a one way deal - burn
Like i am sure he is decent but i wouldnt start him over liles unless he shows he is better at camp and turns some heads. Alot of what happens in the AHL does not easily translate to the NHL fully and we have seen that through some defenders
so how do account for 83M profit from 1 game.
Don't forget all bills that come with an out dour game.
So the game needs to generate at least 100M - zazzle

Ranger is a NHL player, he only played in the A last year by HIS choice.

Yeah really...there is no chance that happens because
a) damn hard to move a guy playing in the A
b) sends a message to UFA's
c) theres a few others who would go down faster than him - Colin Dambrauskas
sending a guy to the minors because you decided he isnt useful enough has far more implications then just saving a few hundred grand on the cap.
Liles is 31.. if the leafs send him down he'll be 34 before he can go elsewhere
a move like that effectively ends his career.. also.. as you said.. other UFAs will ook at toronto as a place not to sign.. "have a bad year and you ride the bus in the AHL.. thats what happens in toronto."

Who said anything about 83M per game!?!....I was thinking like 5-10 for the Leafs game alone...then work your way down from there lol

Meh, other NHL cities have done it...hasn't affected them.
Its part of the biz now.

First it's revenue not profit
Second they don't only sell tickets, they have tons v other revenue streams from those games as well.
