Rooting for the Eagles is just wrong. The problem with the Eagles is that the fans care about winning more than the organization. If the Eagles are able to get into the playoffs and get that sweet, sweet playoff money for the owners, then they're happy. Go root for a real team like the Steelers, Packers, Bears, or, dare I say, Cowboys.

I was ok with this until the last word in your post!

You could say this same thing about most professional sports teams in North America and probably the world.

Well, take a team like the Flyers. Ed Snider's #1 goal is to win another Cup. Sure, he likes his money, but he'd rather win, especially at this point in his life.
Or, take the Steelers. No cheerleaders, no frills, and a family-owned team from day 1. Superbowls are all that matter to them.
The Packers are owned by the fans (well, by the city, which are all fans).
Even the Cowboys. They're so poorly run because their maniac owner wants to win so badly that he tries to put himself into football operations.

The Eagles have an accountant for a GM and just want a bunch of yes men in their ranks. That's why I refuse to root for them. Go Stillers (and (frank) that horrible mascot they tried to develop).

Would you admit that they at least care more about winning than an organization like the Eagles?

I can't believe JSaq rooted for Canada in 2010. Terrorist.

I can't believe anyone would root for a team that had Sidney Crosby on it. A petulant whiner if there ever was one.

I wouldn't go that far.

The Steelers have a philosophy and an identity and stick to it. They invest in scouting, etc to make that philosophy happen. They do that probably better than any team in the NFL.

That's true. The Steelers may be a little more fancy than they were in the 1970s, but they're still a hard-nosed, grinding type of team. Hines Ward is probably my 2nd favorite player of all time, because, for a skill position player, he was as tough as anyone in the league. I just like the "classic" teams, like the Steelers, Packers, and Bears. I don't LIKE Dallas at all, but at least their #1 goal is winning.

For the record, my favorite NFL player of all time is Brian Dawkins, because he's flat-out amazing.

I'll be honest. It was hard to root for the Eagles under the old regime. Especially with Joe Banner involved. There is no doubt in my mind, that his philosophies on how to build and team, and use the cap, kept the Eagles from being a much better team, and possibly winning a Super Bowl. They lost at some point, year after year, for same reason. Time and again. And that was failure to build a complete team. And Andy Reid bought into that, instead of fighting it like a good Coach should. And demanding differently. The kept Reid on for far too long. But there is a new guy in there, so we'll see what he can do. I have zero faith in Vick, but we'll see.

The Eagles were the Salary Cap champs every year.

I don't recall the parade for that one, though.

I was hoping to wait until Bill posted today for this, but I gotta get to work so...

The Top 10 Right Wings in Flyers History

1. Tim Kerr – 4 straight 50 goals seasons, an unstoppable release on his wrist shot and the ultimate force down low, Big Timmy was a goal scoring machine. Injuries cost him hundreds of games or he would have easily eclipsed 500 goals in his career. If he had played under today’s obstruction rules, he would have been an absolute nightmare for opposing dmen.

2. Mark Recchi – For whatever reason, some Flyers fans aren’t very high on Recchi, but the numbers speak for themselves. His 123 points in 92-93 still stands as a Flyers record. Recchi was one of those few players who made other players around him better and in his veteran years became a leader and a very good 2 way player as well.

3. Reggie Leach – Consistency is the only thing which kept The Rifle from being #1 on this list. When he was in the groove, he was the most dangerous goal scorer of his era. However he had a tendency to disappear for long stretches at a time. That being said, his performance in the 1976 playoffs was one of the best I have ever seen and there are some old goalies who probably still have bad dreams about his slapshot!

4. Rick Tocchet – Tocchet worked his tail off upon arriving in the NHL. From a 4th line tough guy/energy player in his rookie year, he quickly developed into one the leagues most dangerous power forwards. In his second stint with the Flyers, he had matured and became a team leader who worked his tail off every moment he was on the ice.

5. Gary Dornhoefer – Dorny was a gritty second line winger during the cup years whose play was absolutely fearless. Long and lanky (Wayne Simmonds is built just like him) Dornhoefer was never afraid to go to the net or do the dirty work in the corners. His game winning goal against Minnesota in the 1973 playoffs was one of the biggest in Flyer’s history.

6. Paul Holmgren – A great combo of tough and talent, Holmgren could intimidate opponents with his glare alone. As tough a player as I have ever witnessed, Homer played through dozens of serious injuries and always led by example.

7. Mikael Renberg – Another guy who would have finished higher on this list if not for injuries. From 93-96, he was one of the best wingers in the game. However, he was never quite the same after a serious abdominal tear in 96. His 82 points in 93-94 is still a club rookie record.

8. Ilka Sinisalo – One of the most underrated talents in Flyers history, all Sinisalo ever seemed to do was score big goals. If he could have ever stayed healthy, he likely would have been a few spots higher on this list.

9. Mike Knuble – a fine combo of skill, strength and class, Knuble had some very good seasons from 2005-2008. He was the perfect complement to Forsberg and Gagne during the 05-06 season and a force on the powerplay. He was one of those very rare players who actually got better with age.

10. Sami Kapanen – perhaps not the most skilled player on this list, but probably the one with the most heart. Kapanen at all of 180lbs (most likely including his skates and equipment) was never afraid to work the corners or take a hit to make a play. An excellent penalty killer and checker, he could also chip in some offense and was a fantastic skater.

Just missed the cut:
Kevin Dineen- nice combo of grit and offense; classy player and a good leader too.
Scott Mellanby- Solid power forward, had his best years with the Florida Panthers
Justin Williams – would have made the list if he had played here a few more years.
Jake Voracek – one more good season away from being on this list
Wayne Simmonds – a couple more good seasons from hitting this list

Exactly my point. 15-20M under the cap, yet had constant holes at linebacker, wide receiver, etc throughout the Reid era.

And somehow end up having $15-20M in cap space. They always have the appearance of going out and spending to get a good team, but they rarely do.

Listen, I'm just as big as a Flyers fan as the next guy. Im a hockey fan first, Flyers fan 2nd (a very very very close 2nd). But I couldn't root for the national team that has the most Flyers. I was born in Philadelphia, raised in Philadelphia, and currently reside in Philadelphia. I've literally never lived anywhere but here. Even so, I couldn't root for Canada (a bitter rival at that) just because they have more Flyers. I'm an American. I root for USA because that's where I was born.
- GirouxForTheShow

I root for a team I like, and it doesn't matter how many Flyers. I rooted for Canada first and then Czech Republic in Nagano and was elated when the Czechs won against the odds. (And maybe I have lingering US Hockey distaste after their behavior in Nagano, which I realize makes no sense because none of those meatheads are still playing). I root for Finland secondarily since I scouted the Olympics for a local columnist a for Salt Lake. Just like the whole Finnish underdog feisty thing. I was all excited for the miracle on ice. I just am not wedded to jingoism.

I had more trouble with the approach to the draft where they always seemed to want to find a hidden gem instead of picking up the perfectly faceted diamond in front of them.

My favorite 2 picks were Kevin Kolb, followed by Mike "Close Your Eyes on Contact" Mamula. Oh, and that 30-year-old volunteer fireman they grabbed off the street.
