cleary over gagne.... doesn't make sense to me - flyer186
Cleary's a better fit for the role the Flyers need filled. He's grittier than Gagne, and considering that he's likely to be on the third line with Couturier and Read, they could use a bit more sandpaper on that line.
He's also been healthier than Gagne. Over the past 3 years, Gagne has missed 77 games out of a possible 212. That's around 40%. |

I imagine it's the term/money that will make people uneasy. Thing is, we don't know what they could or couldn't get Gagne for. Since they went this route, I'm guessing Gagne wants more money/years than people may think he does. |

I'm not a fan of the term, would have been really happy with 2 years. The money is about $250K per year more than I expected. That said, I still like it, overall |

At this point of the season, the only way Read gets traded is if a big-salary player is packaged with him (think Meszy, Coburn, Grossmann). I think our odds of retaining him in the off-season are slim to none. So if we don't make a playoff run, I think our return for Read would be a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Otherwise, he walks at the end of the year. It's a shame, but I think that's Read's status in a nutshell. |

Unless Read is unhappy here, and unwilling to re-sign, the Flyers can re-sign him at some point during the Season, without a doubt. No reason why they can't if Read is willing to. And his value is higher then that, especially if he is re-signed to a solid deal.

This Cleary signing is terrible. After all the hard work getting rid of dead wood like Briere and Bryzgalov and signing quality FAs like Vinny and Streit, Holmgren just had to sign a washed up third liner who's almost 35 to a three year deal with an NTC thrown in for good measure. |

who says we still can't get gagne - 2Real
Cap-wise, we could get him. But now, he doesn't have a spot on the roster. He's not a top-6 forward (and those lines are set anyway) or a 4th liner. Cleary just took the other 3rd line spot. Sadly, he's not coming back.
Neither is Read, sadly. |

I honestly don't understand why some think that Read leaving is a given. |

Dan Cleary for 2.75 per for 3 years!? With a NTC...Holmgren is easily the worst GM in the league. |

I don't think it's terrible, because he's a player that can help the Flyers. Certainly don't like the term of the rumored deal, but as long as he doesn't decline, he's a good player added to the mix. I personally would've preferred to work some of the kids into the lineup. |

We have some extensions kicking in (Giroux/Hartnell/Couturier), we have to resign Schenn (not much of a change cap-wise, if at all) and 2 goalies. We have to replace/resign someone to replace Timonen/Meszaros unless we have an AHLer who develops enough to earn a full season of NHL play. Given Read will want somewhere in the $3-$3M range, it might not work to bring him back.
Things can change in a hurry and all, and players can move/progress/regress, but I'd put the odds at less than 50/50 easily. |

Cleary took more penalties than he drew last season. Flyers are doomed. Such a key statistic. |

I well aware of all of that. And Read is going to command considerably more then 3M in my opinion. Closer to 4-4.5M range. But he can be re-signed.
The Hartnell and Couturier extensions are minimal. |

It's way too early to be assuming that Matt Read will be gone after the season. A lot can (and probably will) happen over the next 10 months or so that may give the Flyers more breathing room to re-sign the key forward. |

I don't see him coming back with all of the other needs they'll have to address. Just my take on it. |

Could be worse, Holmgren could have given 4.75 per to a player who had more concussions than goals last year. Enjoy Clowe. |

That's all very true. But nothing really needs to happen for the Flyers to be able to re-sign Read at some point this Season. Other then Read wanting to re-sign here, and that both sides can come to an agreement. |

It's certainly a possibility that Read could be playing somewhere else after this Season, or could possibly be traded. All I'm saying is that there is just as much of a possibility that he is re-signed. |
