Here's my 2 cents: it seems like the Flyers want to bring their prospects along slowly, giving them plenty of time to develop and mature before bringing them up to the NHL. I can't say that is a bad strategy and will most likely give their better prospects a much greater chance of staying in the NHL when they make the jump. Although I don't like the no trade clause and I think the contract is a year too long I think Cleary is a good two way role playing forward with some grit to his game and his cup experience should be valuable. |

prospects slowly = closer to free agency when they are contributing, need to play them when they are young and cheap |

Ah, yes that would be the other side of the coin. Though it seems the new CBA hampers the ability of young players to get a big contract as quickly. Also, the Flyers don't have prospects that are truly NHL ready, the still need seasoning. But, you do make a very valid point.

I think it's very possible that both McGinn and Laughton are NHL ready. |

Tim Panaccio: Cleary Over Youth? Your Call - tpanaccio
I prefer going with Cleary, even though I think that the contract is one year too long.
They can make moves to free slots if the younger players prove ready. It won;t hurt the Flyers at all if Adam Hall is beaten out by Laughton for the 4th line center job. If Tye McGinn was a better skater, maybe he could do all the things Cleary does more cheaply, but we haven;t seen anything to suggest that McGinn can play on a PK unit or be a very solid two way player with decent speed. |

Cap hit is too high and the deal is at least a year too long. I would have rather see some younger guys get some time in the line up. |

Smart move. His experience will benefit the youth you already have up front. |

Good Move, Hardworking Newfie, most work all their lives, Cleary's good for another few years. Kinda surprised at the price though... |

Which is fair, the guy still looked really good at his role in the playoffs, but he wasn't going to get that money again.....
So Pronger goes on LTIR, and everything is ok for the Cap, but what if He comes back?? |

I have a better chance of dating a super model, then Pronger has of resuming his Hockey career.

I see what you're saying. Any teams D would look better with a healthy Pronger, but if he is done like Lindros....
Any Flyers fans expecting to see Bryz this season? PTO maybe? |

Dan Cleary is a heart and soul type of player and would be an asset to any team he is on. Would have preferred a two year deal but Cleary will work his butt off for three years and Flyers will get there monies worth. Couter between Cleary and Read, could be a good line. |

Look up and down this lineup and all you see on the front lines is youth, a good veteran winger to help those guys grow is more important than developing another rookie on this team. Develop Laughton, Cousins, McGinn and the others down in the minors where they will get top minutes and if injuries occur they will be ready to jump in. |

Laughton is not eligible to play in the AHL. If he doesn't make the Flyers, he goes back to Juniors.
