I could see the cap circumvention here... just sign him now and use the 10% cushion, though.
- flyguy12

Makes getting under the cap prior to LTIR'ing Pronger a bit tricky. Still doable, though

It's very possible, I'd have to crunch the numbers. But it is very possible that the Flyers don't have the room under the 10% cushion.

Folly, as in lack of good sense? Seems more like misfortune to me. Unless you're saying he woke up that morning and thought, "Hmm, I'm going to help my team and/or advance my career by getting hurt today."
- BulliesPhan87

You are correct. Good thing they are getting the injuries out of the way early. I'm predicting a roster full of Cal Ripken's once the season starts.

So you're telling me there's no cap problem? They're currently 2 million over the cap. sure they can shuffle the deck chairs and write off the Pronger contract but that doesn't mean they are in a good cap position and that's a problem.

If they really want Cleary and can't sign him today because they don't have cap room and they lose him because of that then there's a problem. (supposition but valid example)

...and if you don't like my analogy it doesn't mean it's not an effective cry for help.

- mayorofangrytown

I think the only "problem" is that you (and no doubt others) do not like the way the Flyers manage their cap space. They choose to spend to the limit every year and use every exemption and tactic at their disposal to spend as much as they can. They seem to believe that if they are ever in a situation in which they need more cap room than they have, that they'll be able to move players or take other actions to find that cap room and do whatever deal they're trying to do. Doesn't always work out that way, but that seems to be their strategy.

Lots of folks would seem to prefer that they reserved some cap space for "emergencies" or other unexpected situations. Others are OK with the approach but disagree on whom the Flyers choose to spend all their cap money. Fans are certainly entitled to their opinions on these topics, but I don't believe that the Flyers have a "cap space problem". They are simply doing what they always do and spending every dime they are allowed. We as fans may not like how they spend it, but the fact that they spend to the limit all the time is not a problem per se. It's just how they choose to operate (or how Snider allows them to operate). I suppose if you want to term their entire approach a problem, then you could take that opinion. But it's not like they don't understand what they're doing or what the consequences of their spending will be. This is the way they choose to run their team. We may not like it, but it is not a "cap problem". Rarely, if ever does the cap keep them from doing what they really want to do.

Yes, I'm telling you that there is no Cap problem. And technically, no they aren't over the Cap. Every single NHL team has to make moves to become Cap compliant at the end of training Camp.
Being in a bad Cap position is not being able to make the moves you want to improve the team. That is clearly not the case.
Flyers aren't shuffling the deck chairs, they are using the rules of the Salary Cap under the CBA to maximize the use of their Cap resources. And they do the same every year. The Flyers are going to max out those resources, pretty much every year. The Cap has been around for about 8 years now.

- MJL

Yes, they are over the salary cap but within the 10% exception.

Show me where every single NHL team has to make moves to become Cap compliant at the end of training camp.

This is the problem. There is a lack of actual understanding of the Cap, and how it works. No offense, but that's the truth. The Flyers are under the Off Season Cap. They are not over the Cap. Every team, at the end of training Camp, has to assign players to the AHL or to Juniors. Or waive players to become Cap compliant for the Season deadline on the last day of training Camp. Every single team has to make moves to be Cap complaint, and to submit their opening day roster to the League. Flyers are in no different of a position then any other team. And they have the means to do so without trading a single player.

And I'll repeat what I've stated many times previously. Capgeek does not keep the off season Cap. What you see there are projections for every team. And is not how the Cap is actually kept in the Off Season. It is still the Off Season. Until the last day of Training Camp. That is fundamentally how the NHL Salary Cap works.

Homer must be happy about that... Quickly Raffl is changing out of his #12 sweater and Homer is on the phone w/Gagne's agent.

No offense but I do know how the cap works, well not all of the new stuff from last year yet, but I have the previous cap down. I know how they calculate it I know how all of it works. I know about the off season. There's nothing you're going to teach me given a week and a dollar that's going to change my opinion of what they're doing to manage the cap.

The way they manage the cap I see as a problem. You obviously don't.

I figgin' hate the cap and wish it would go away as I've stated on here many times, repeatedly. I don't like mentioning the cap because instead of actually talking about the issues we're having it turns into someone's lecture on what they know about the cap that they think everyone else must be oblivious too because our collective heads are up our a$$es.

It wasn't a cap problem when we lost depth players off our team several years ago or employed a back up goalie and a defenseman from local programs on one day contracts. That's all well within the rules of the cap so nothing is ever a problem until they violate the cap.

Sounds good. What do I know.

Cleary fits, but he's not the end all. We have Gagne, youth options, or even Morrow as options if Cleary doesn't report on Thursday.
