In any other industry in America a company can dismiss an employee for public comments that they don't want to be associated with and the first amendment doesn't protect you from that. The Bruins would have been completely within their rights to tell their employee to shut his mouth. Athletes tend to get a little more leeway in that regard but their comments are still open to backlash. Thankfully, the first amendment doesn't protect you from that either. Again, freedom of speech just means that you can say what you want, not that you can do it without criticism. - Jeffmt
watch i can play too.
i agree with you oh wise on. all these other folks are fools!!!!!

here we go. you have no idea about my politics. and venom? hyperbole much? it's not the white house. for me it's the way he went off the resevation in a very public way. HE LEFT THE FRICKEN TEAM. that's why i'm mad. he was the greatest goalie in recent bruins memory maybe the greatest ever, at least the greatest story, and he imploded. see ya. (frank) the media or politics. he melted down and bailed. - Fountain-San
Now we're dealing with labor and privacy rights. He didn't leave the team mid season. He made his announcement in the OS and the Bruins had Raask in the wings - who they were constantly touting as their future starter. Where was the implosion? |

lets not go overboard. honor your contract and the organization that made you a millionaire. - Fountain-San
Exactly. If you're lucky enough to win the Stanley Cup there are some assumed obligations that go along with that, one of those is a photo op with the president. That's a big deal for the team and the league. They're paying you a lot of money to represent the Bruins so just be an adult and honor your commitments. That's all. |

Either way Tim Thomas is a wildcard - and in my opinion a little bit loopy.

Of course it does. Telling someone to shut up when they are speaking politically is telling them not to exercise their first amendment right.
And no, I am not saying it is a civil rights violation. - tredbrta
That's a load of horsehockey. It's that user's first amendment right (assuming they're American, of course) to express his interest in Tim Thomas shutting up. |

Employers can bar political discussion at work but I am not sure Thomas ever stated a political opinion while working.
Still not yet clear whether an employer can fire someone because they only disagree with the opinion. They certainly cannot if it falls under NLRA. |

You might have a point there, I don't know. It certainly doesn't mean that he can't be called out on it from fans and media though. |

He then went on to tweet "its a sad day for out nation blah blah blah" when the gay marriage law was passed.

I may have exagerrated about the rapture..... - Joel_Eh
Wow. Still looking for the "I hate gay people" statement. Looks more like a statement about government dictating religious belief. In this case, regarding the topic of marriage. |

I would honestly love if he came to Calgary
Then he wouldn't have to visit the white house when they win the cup this year - The-O-G
They guy is a Right Wing nut job.
He wont wanna play in Canada full of its damn lefties.
What is the Southern most state with a hockey club? That's where he wants to play...
Looks like Florida gets their man....
Allthough Tampa has more rednecks so they would be a better fit... |

Bruins teammates would tell you different - Fountain-San
Really? Maybe you should start your own blog. You obviously have a multitude of sources with the Bruins....
The fact actually remains that Thomas is still friends with many current roster players on the Bruins. In fact, several have been out with Thomas since he left the team. Ference is one of them.
There were a few displeased with the distraction of the White House. Thomas regretted it. Their, mostly anonymous, quotes have been overplayed. |

BS, if Ference had refused to go to the Bush White House he would have been called a hero in Boston. - tredbrta
Wow!
This is almost as ridiculous as your "Rand Paul" understanding of Obamacare.
Btw, what's with the Chomsky obsession?
I'm guessing you took this internet personality of yours public......
And Noam made you look like a fool. |

I didn't say he hated gay people i said he actively spoke out about gay marriage, mentioned how they are basically spitting in the face of the bibles idea of marriage, tweeted how its sad day for a country when gay marriage was passed.
Call me crazy but I feel like inferring he doesn't really like gay people isnt much of a stretch. |

How is this still an issue. Manny didn't go to the White House because it was manny being manny. Theo didn't go and was on the campaign trail with Kerry one year. Hell, even Michael Jordan, James Harrison, albert pujos and the great Larry bird skipped going to the White House.
And you know what, who cares except small minded people that can't imagine that someone dare not agree with whatever there beliefs are and toe the line.
Should of been, and should still be, a none issue. |

You said it.
What you just proved is that this is entirely about what Thomas believes and not his method of protest.
Didn't know about Manny or Theo. Thanks for that. Does F San think they were team players? |

It certainly was and is a stretch.
The man takes his religious beliefs seriously just like Pavel Datsyuk. Does believing gay marriage is wrong mean you hate gay people? Does believing the government legislating against a religious belief is constitutionally incorrect mean you hate gay people?
The tiny, tiny minds here explain why political correctness is trumping the constitution in so many ways. Really sad. |
