This blog was slightly out of context from what actually happened.
He was actually point out to the defense that standing around in front of the net while a man down was "useless", he has been quoted multiple times saying the thinks the defense can do quite well this season and has been overall nothing but optimistic and empowering.

Agreed. And very much looking forward to the Rockies new defense system.
But seriously, also agreed that a coach using the word "useless" doesn't mean his defense is actually that, but he's trying to inspire them. The phrase "coach calls his d-men useless", in or around, is a catch to get us to read, which is what we're doing.
"Useless" = "Move your dumb asses around and *do* something!" Par for the course.
Give Garth a chance. Threads like these quickly emanate into something like a news story comments section from CNN. No one actually talks about the problems or the solutions, but jests and jokes abound. While that's fun, it gets us nowhere. Perhaps add in the jokes with some serious talk.
