Gustafsson would get claimed on waivers in half a heartbeat. - Jsaquella
I still don't understand waivers or recall waivers. |

I guess not. Im not really a fan of Gervais or Gill.
If the team remains as it is, the team will probably send Gus to the AHL and he will be called up if any dman is out for an extended period of time. Gervais should only play if the team loses a dman on a long road trip or if a dman needs a few games to recover. - PhillySportsGuy
Gill is just getting a friendly look. But he's done. Cooked.
Gervais, to me, is a perfect #7 defenseman. Cheap, stashed in the press box, only called upon under emergency conditions. Development not ruined by sitting for most of the season.
There's an extra body right now, but they have to be prepared for injuries. |

I didn't think much of Meszaros, to be honest. Yeah, he hasn't played for the better part of a year, but at the same time, he looked pretty sloppy defensively. Not that Gus had a stellar game either. Neither looked like a top-6 NHL dman last night. - jmatchett383
and I thought Meszaros looked really good...played a simple game and moved puck on the pp....He is a top 4 talent on this team if he can get his health in order and keep it that way.
It was the first preseason game....so I ain't to concerned....could go to game tonight in TO...but it really is a waste of $.
not much to add as others are pretty close on what happened last night.....I thought both high scoring rookies played well....Cousins and Laughton....Cousins has a nose for the net....you can't teach that. |

screw you all...had to watch the pit columbus game cause i live in NY....
edit: enjoyed watching columbus beat pitt. - PhillaBully
You didn't miss a ton. Watching half the team is not that exciting.
Hartnell as playmaker was interesting. Watching Cousins look like a younger, fresher Briere was interesting.
However, there was lots of not finishing, and lots of hits on us and not the other way around.
And at least 3 - 4 odd man break aways. I can think of a couple 2 on 1 and 3 on 2 off the top of my head.

Recall waivers no longer exist.
A player's waiver status depends on time in service, age and a few other factors.
Gustafsson is no longer waiver exempt, so if he gets sent to the Phantoms, he's got to clear waivers first. |

No way Gus would pass waivers. He's on the team or on another team.

The other good thing about Gervais is, he can be stashed in the AHL without incurring any NHL cap penalty.
If they have an injury situation, thy can use Gervais in limited minutes, or recall Lauridsen or Manning and return Gervais to the press box. |

Cousins was pretty much just as advertised. He has tremendous puck skills, but he may have a hard time adjusting to wing. He's not particularly fast and he's not the type to play the boards well |

Right, exactly. So when an injury occurs, Gervais doesn't even have to be the first option. They can call up one of the kids and demote Gervais and not affect the cap much, if at all. |

Rinaldo seemed to have a target on him, lots of Leafs it seemed were looking to hit him.
Mez was fine, I think his quick shot from the point is something they missed.
If they keep everyone I think Mez will be in the top six ahead of Gus.
Cousins may have a shot at making the team, he looked very good, although just a preseason game.
If I were a Leaf fan I'd be excited to watch Kadri this year.
He is going to be great.

I'd prefer they keep Meszaros (as well as Kimmo, Schenn, Coburn, Grossmann, Gustafsson, and Streit) and stash Gervais in the AHL as your #8 (or 9, 10, whatever after Lauridsen, Manning, Alt, whoever). Hold onto all 7, and wait for a team to have a defenseman go down for an extended time (Carolina grabbed Hainsey quick) and deal from a position of relative strength. Right now, no reason to just give Meszaros away. |

I think Rinaldo painted a target on himself. He instigated and drew penalties all over the place. |

If they think Meszaros is healthy, I'd rather trade Grossmann, and keep Gustafsson in the top 6.
Unfortunately, nobody knows if Meszaros can stay healthy, so that might not be a prudent idea. |

He looks pretty decent.. but I would like to see him get a full year in at the AHL level. He is the type of player that can really benefit from that time there.
Laughton looked pretty good to me. Had a few dandy set ups, but the thing that I pay attention to (and look for the most) is positioning. He is always in the right spots both offensively and defensively. |

With their history, the Flyers may be the first to lose a defenseman to injury. It might behoove the Flyers to keep Gus and wait for the inevitable injury to occur. |
